Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking an Environmental Technician. The Environmental Technician will report to the Environmental Manager and will be responsible for supporting environmental compliance through refinery waste management, regulatory inspections, sampling, recordkeeping, and support of environmental programs across refinery operations.

Relocation is not approved for this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with the evaluation and selection of environmental and safety equipment; and conducts periodic checks to ensure good operating conditions.

  • Liaises with contractors on field-related environmental and safety matters.

  • Assists with environmental and safety considerations for operationally-required confined space entry, hot work permits, and rescue plans.

  • Prepares and maintains records necessary for compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

  • Coordinates activities of contractor environmental and safety service personnel and work as necessary and directed.

  • Supports company's safety and environmental rules; and assists in compliance audits of Company and contractor personnel in the field.

  • Monitors, documents, and supports hazard communication, oil spill control, hazardous waste disposal and other environmental programs and plans.

  • Issues work clearance permits and directs work to assure Environmental compliance.

  • Completes required regulatory activities (including land farm management, inspections, waste sampling, characterization and labeling), as required by the RCRA Part B Permit.

  • Operates mobile equipment to transport waste and coordinate proper storage. Manifests waste shipments.

  • Coordinates change-outs of spent carbon canisters and monthly sample collection in accordance with Benzene Waste Operations NESHAP requirements.

  • Assists with plant Frac Tank placement and management.

  • Completes proper RCRA, DOT and HAZWOPER training as required.

  • Responds to environmental issues outside of normal business hours and serves on a rotating on-call schedule to support facility environmental needs.

  • Supports all Turnarounds by providing Waste Management and Environmental compliance oversight, including coverage on 12-hour day and night shifts as required.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with four (4) years of relevant experience.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in refining or industrial environment.

  • Training and experience operating heavy equipment such as a forklift and/or backhoe.

  • Experience in RCRA and BWON compliance including sampling protocol is desired as well as DOT regulatory compliance.

  • Active Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

SKILLS

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote).

  • Willingness to learn computer software for waste management and environmental compliance.

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both frontline workers and leadership.

  • Self-motivated, good time management, and mechanically inclined.

  • Possess a willingness to make timely decisions and be capable of expanding beyond the stated responsibilities.

  • Be able to think strategically and work towards continual improvement of internal processes.
