About this role

About the Role Butzel Long seeks an environmental attorney to advise clients on environmental compliance obligations, draft and review legal documents, and manage and advise on environmental transactions across practice areas. The role involves working with clients on permitting, compliance, enforcement responses, and remedial requirements across federal, state, and local levels.

What You'll Do

  • Advise on permitting, compliance, enforcement actions, and remedial requirements.
  • Serve as primary author of legal memoranda, briefs, motions, discovery requests, contracts, regulatory agreements, and/or substantive environmental policy articles and commentary.
  • Research environmental, land use, or administrative law and regulatory requirements at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Represent clients in administrative or court hearings, draft and respond to discovery requests, supervise document review and production, and take or defend depositions.
  • Manage client relationships and participate in business development.

What We're Looking For

  • 4-6+ years of experience in federal and state environmental and land use law.
  • Substantial experience with CERCLA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, TSCA, FIFRA and Michigan NREPA equivalents, and/or involvement in EHS support including compliance, transactional, and litigation support.
  • Experience representing public and/or private sector clients in minimizing environmental liability risks related to asset transfers, development, siting, operation and permitting (industrial and waste facilities; wind, solar, energy storage, and natural gas facilities); or representing clients in other transactional matters involving environmental liability; or representing clients in administrative or court hearings, including discovery, administrative record cases and/or non-record civil cases.
  • Admitted to the Michigan state bar or eligible for admission by anticipated start date; portable book of business.
  • Experience with solid and hazardous waste facilities is a plus.
