Engineering Technician - Public Works
Robert Half is seeking an Engineering Technician to support municipal engineering, development review, permitting, and public works activities. This Engineering Technician position provides a combination of office and field technical engineering support, including reviewing construction and subdivision plans, assisting with development review, preparing engineering drawings, supporting field survey activities, and issuing encroachment permits.
The ideal Engineering Technician candidate will have experience working with civil engineering plans, land development, public works projects, surveying, or municipal engineering and be comfortable working with engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, and the general public. This Engineering Technician role is an Onsite position out of Fairfield and can be Part-time as well.
Key Responsibilities

Review subdivision final maps, parcel maps, and construction plans for compliance with City Planning and Engineering requirements and accepted construction practices.

Review and interpret civil engineering plans associated with streets, utilities, land development, and public infrastructure improvements.

Prepare engineering plans, specifications, profiles, cross-sections, and related technical drawings.

Perform horizontal and vertical alignment calculations and other engineering computations supporting:

Street improvements

Curb and gutter construction
-
Sewer systems
-
Water systems
-
Storm drainage
-
Parks and other public improvement projects
-
Assist with the development review process, including review and coordination of plans submitted for private and public improvement projects.

Process and issue encroachment permits in accordance with City requirements.

Provide flood zone determinations and respond to requests for general engineering and development information.

Participate as a member of a field survey crew, gathering and documenting field data for planning, engineering, and public works projects.

Assist with construction staking, improvement-site surveys, and property boundary surveys.

Use surveying equipment to obtain accurate field measurements and assist with survey calculations.

Reproduce, organize, and assemble engineering plans, specifications, maps, and related documents.

Maintain accurate records associated with engineering drawings, surveys, permits, and field activities.

Prepare technical documentation and reports as required.

Coordinate and communicate with City employees, engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, and members of the public.

Perform other related engineering support duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Technical Skills
Candidates should have knowledge of or experience with:
- Basic civil engineering principles and practices used in engineering drawing, plan review, and field survey work.
- Reading and interpreting construction plans, subdivision maps, parcel maps, engineering drawings, and specifications.
- Computer-aided design and drafting (CAD) software.
- Engineering drafting practices and equipment.
- Basic surveying principles, equipment, measurements, and calculations.
- Public works and land-development construction practices.
- Construction safety standards and regulations.
- Municipal development review and permitting processes.
- Encroachment permits and public right-of-way projects.

Manage multiple projects, reviews, and requests while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Ideal Background
-
The strongest candidates will have previous experience as an Engineering Technician, Civil Engineering Technician, Public Works Technician, Development Review Technician, Survey Technician, or similar role within a city, county, engineering firm, public works department, or land-development environment.

Experience combining civil plan review, CAD/drafting, surveying, development review, and encroachment permitting would be particularly relevant.
