Job title: Engineering Manager
About the Role Canonical is hiring an Engineering Manager for the Commercial Systems unit to drive the development of internal products with high engineering quality. You will lead and mentor engineers across multiple teams (Billing, Business Systems, Data Governance, Livepatch) and partner with other engineering and business teams to deliver scalable, reliable services that underpin Canonical's growth. This is a home-based, remote role in the EMEA region with occasional in-person meetups two to four times a year.
What You'll Do
- Lead software engineering managers and engineers across Billing, Business Systems, Data Governance, and Livepatch to deliver internal products and services.
- Own accountability for the development of internal products, maintain high engineering quality standards, and drive delivery.
- Collaborate with operations, product, and business teams to align on strategy and execution; mentor and develop direct reports.
- Promote open-source solutions and contribute to Canonical's engineering culture in a distributed, global environment.
- Represent Canonical's engineering priorities across teams and stakeholders and help plan roadmaps.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or senior software engineering leader with a track record of delivering high-quality software.
- Strong people leadership and mentorship skills; ability to grow engineers and build high-performing teams.
- Hands-on software engineering background with experience shipping enterprise-grade software and systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a distributed, remote, cross-functional environment and partner with operations, product, and business teams.
- Passion for open-source, collaboration, and the mission of Canonical.
- Interest or experience in domains mentioned in this posting (billing/payments, enterprise business systems, data governance, kernel patch delivery) is a plus.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Golang and building services (e.g., billing-related components).
- Familiarity with NetSuite and Salesforce in enterprise environments.
- Experience with data governance tools such as Trino and Ranger, or data mesh concepts.
- Exposure to Linux kernel patching domains (Livepatch) and open-source software delivery.
