About the Role

Engineering Lead in the Database Reliability Engineering team within Wise's Platform tribe. You will lead and grow a high-performing team, influence automation strategy and database tech decisions, and contribute to building reliable production systems for Wise's customers.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach and mentor a high-performing Database Reliability Engineering team, delivering high-impact solutions.
  • Provide occasional hands-on software engineering and systems operator work, bringing senior engineering expertise.
  • Collaborate with other leads, engineers, and product managers across the organization to address big-picture analytics, engineering, and business challenges.
  • Own vendor negotiations and articulate costs to the business.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong leadership with problem-solving skills; able to guide teams through project delivery using agile and traditional methodologies.
  • Excellent communicator; able to present to the wider organization.
  • Comfortable owning vendor negotiations and explaining costs.
  • Solid development background in Python or Java, strong coding standards, and solid system design principles.
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS or GCP) and platform engineering to build robust, scalable infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases; understanding of high availability, scalability, and security.
  • Commitment to operational excellence and experience leading a service reliability engineering team.

Nice to Have

  • Passion for technology and its relationship with product and user experience.
  • Security and privacy advocate; applies security principles at infrastructure and application levels.
  • Experience with configuration management (Ansible, Packer), CI/CD (GitHub Actions), Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration (Temporal, Cadence, AWS Step Functions).
  • Customer-centric mindset; ability to articulate complex concepts to non-technical audiences.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting salary: £135,000 - £175,000 + RSU
  • Additional benefits and hybrid work arrangement as part of Wise.
