The location for the position is to reside is within the Duke Energy service area and within a reasonable commute to the regional headquarters in Charlotte, Raleigh, or St. Petersburg.
This position provides technical leadership and engineering expertise supporting the evaluation, qualification, and deployment of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technologies across Duke Energy's growing energy storage portfolio. The role is primarily responsible for technical assessment of major BESS equipment, Approved Vendor List management, supplier engagement, and support of project development, execution, and lifecycle planning activities.
The successful candidate will work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate across Energy Storage Engineering, Supply Chain, Energy Storage Development, Project Management and Construction, Operations, and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities

Lead technical evaluations of BESS equipment and manage the BESS Approved Vendor List.

Support supplier qualification activities, including factory visits, supplier audits, and Factory Acceptance Testing

Partner with Supply Chain on RFPs, supplier evaluations, and equipment procurement strategies.

Assess system designs, equipment performance, lifecycle considerations, spare parts strategies, and augmentation planning.

Support development, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness of utility-scale energy storage facilities.

Evaluate technical risks associated with system design, interconnection requirements, controls, metering, and grid integration.

Provide technical due diligence for greenfield and brownfield projects, including feasibility studies, preliminary design reviews, and cost evaluations.

Develop technical reports, engineering recommendations, specifications, and design documentation.

Monitor industry developments and advise internal stakeholders on emerging technologies, standards, and supplier capabilities.

Maintain strong relationships with equipment manufacturers, system integrators, EPC contractors, and internal business partners.

Travel domestically and internationally to supplier facilities and project sites (approximately 15%).

Key Skills & Experience
-
Experience with utility-scale BESS technologies and power system engineering.
-
Familiarity with power system modeling tools such as PSSE, TARA, CYME, PSCAD, DSATools or MATLAB.

Knowledge of utility interconnection requirements and inverter-based resources (IBR).

Working knowledge of IEEE, NFPA, and UL standards relevant to energy storage and power systems.

Experience evaluating equipment suppliers, conducting FATs, or supporting major equipment procurement is preferred

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

Demonstrated ability to lead technical evaluations, influence stakeholders, and communicate complex engineering concepts.

Strong project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
