About this role

Position Title: Emergency Critical Care Veterinary Technician

Status: Full Time

The Veterinary Technician – Emergency and Critical Care will provide hands-on nursing care and clinical support to faculty veterinarians, small animal rotating interns, and veterinary students. The role includes direct patient care, emergency triage, medication administration, monitoring hospitalized patients, teaching assistance, client communication, and accurate completion of treatment sheets and medical records. This position is ideal for a seasoned technician who is comfortable with after-hours patient care and who values working in a university clinical teaching environment. Technicians with experience in overnight emergency or critical care are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a board-certified emergency and critical care specialist and a team of four licensed veterinary technicians (three serving in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital), three small-animal veterinary assistants, and four small-animal rotating interns across various service areas. A central goal of this recruitment is to expand the technical staff team so that nursing coverage can be shared across shifts and the hospital can provide consistent 24-hour care for small-animal patients. The Emergency and Critical Care service is supported by diagnostic imaging, including radiography, ultrasound, and computed tomography, as well as a full-service diagnostic laboratory covering clinical pathology, parasitology, microbiology, histopathology, and necropsy. Additional clinical units in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital include internal medicine, community practice, surgery, dentistry, and dermatology.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide direct nursing care, handling, and continuous monitoring of small animal patients in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
  • Assist faculty veterinarians and interns with routine and specialized procedures, including physical examinations, diagnostic sample collection, medication administration, anesthesia monitoring, pain management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other emergency or specialty procedures.
  • Triage incoming patients, obtain and communicate pertinent histories and vital parameters, recognize changes in patient status, and appropriately prioritize patients for veterinary evaluation and intervention.
  • Carry out and document patient care instructions using SmartFlow treatment sheets, and maintain timely, accurate medical records in ezyVet medical records software.
  • Support veterinary students and small animal rotating interns by teaching and demonstrating technical and nursing skills, including triage, medication administration, intravenous catheter placement, fluid therapy, bandaging, sample collection, and patient monitoring.
  • Maintain, organize, and properly operate equipment and supplies in the Emergency and Critical Care treatment and ward areas.
  • Manage and monitor hospitalized patients and collaborate with other technicians, assistants, interns, and faculty to support continuous 24-hour nursing care as staffing capacity is expanded.
  • Maintain cleanliness, patient safety, infection-control practices, and compliance with applicable accreditation and regulatory standards, including AAHA, IACUC, USDA, OSHA, and AVMA-COE requirements.
  • Participate in academic rounds and contribute to clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students and small-animal rotating interns.
  • Provide professional client communication, patient-care updates, and discharge education as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Dean, Department Head, VTH Director, or Section Chief.

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)

  • One of the following qualification pathways: graduation from an accredited veterinary technology program or equivalent training; or a minimum of 3 to 5 years of substantial hands-on experience in small-animal clinical practice, emergency care, critical care, inpatient nursing, or a comparable veterinary hospital setting.
  • Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a veterinary technician in the State of Alabama is preferred but is not required for an otherwise qualified, experienced candidate, subject to Tuskegee University Human Resources review and applicable state requirements.
  • Demonstrated competency in patient triage, nursing of hospitalized patients, medication administration, patient monitoring, treatment-sheet execution, medical record documentation, and communication of changes in patient status.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills, with the ability to work independently during after-hours periods and collaboratively within a clinical teaching team.
