Embedded Software Engineer (m/f/d)

We develop and deliver high-tech solutions for Earth observation, navigation, telecommunications, science, exploration, and space missions with more than 40 years of experience. We are building next-generation avionics—using modern multicore processors and Rust as a strategic building block alongside C/C++ We are developing a common application core for satellite flight software that can be reused across missions and spacecraft platforms. The software is developed using a model-based software engineering approach and implemented in C. As part of a long-term product team, you will help bring the application core to product-level maturity. You will then maintain and extend it throughout its lifecycle, incorporating experience and new requirements from its use in different satellite projects.

Your Tasks

• Develop and maintain reusable embedded flight software
• Refine software system requirements and translate software requirements and architectural concepts into precise software models
• Develop, review and integrate generated and handwritten C code
• Improve the application core’s architecture, modularity, portability and configurability; refactor, generalise and port existing functionality
• Integrate the software on different processor platforms and real-time operating systems
• Develop automated tests and verify models, generated code and integrated software
• Analyse defects and deliver controlled corrections and product updates
• Support product releases, configuration management and qualification activities
• Contribute to modelling guidelines, development methods, toolchains and continuous integration

Your Qualifications

• A degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related discipline
• Several years of experience in embedded or real-time software development, with a good understanding of resource-constrained systems and hardware/software interaction
• Strong programming skills in C
• Experience with model-based software design or a strong interest in developing this expertise
• Understanding of software architecture, modular design and well-defined interfaces
• Experience with automated testing, debugging and software integration
• An interest in developing and maintaining a reusable software product over multiple releases
• Very good written and spoken English

Useful Additional Experience

• Experience in some of the following areas would be helpful, but we do not expect you to bring all of them:
• Modelling and code-generation tools used for embedded software
• First-hand knowledge of Rust and its integration in embedded C applications
• Verification of consistency between requirements, models, generated code and tests
• Product-line engineering, software platforms or configurable software products
• API design, compatibility management and controlled software evolution
• RTEMS, VxWorks, Embedded Linux or another real-time operating system
• LEON, ARM (Zynq/Versal), RISC-V or comparable embedded processor platforms
• Multicore systems, concurrency and deterministic scheduling
• Static analysis, code-coverage analysis and requirements-based testing
• ECSS, DO-178 or another regulated software-development environment
• Spacecraft avionics and on-board communication technologies
• Knowledge of German

Working in the Product Team

You will join a team with long-term responsibility for the common application core, from requirements to software models and implementation through integration, qualification, release and maintenance. The team works closely with satellite projects that use and configure the application core. Feedback and new requirements from these projects are assessed and incorporated into the common product where they provide broader value. This allows improvements made for one mission to benefit future spacecraft while maintaining a stable and controlled product baseline. The position is based in Bremen and supports a hybrid combination of on-site and remote work.
