Job title: EHS Manager
About the Role The EHS Manager will serve as the subject matter expert for occupational health, safety, environmental management and sustainability programs at MDA Space. Reporting directly to the Operations or PA Director, this role will develop, implement, and maintain a proactive EHS management system that ensures compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, municipal health and safety and environmental legislation and customer requirements. The position requires daily onsite presence and dot-line reporting to the Director EHS in Shared Service to ensure OneMDA alignment across operations. The successful candidate will foster a zero-injury culture, co-chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), and partner with the business to integrate health, safety, and environmental considerations into operations and projects.
What You'll Do
- Lead, mentor, and manage EHS personnel, including specialists, coordinators, and advisors; provide coaching, performance feedback, and development opportunities to build a high-performing EHS team.
- Support, implement and maintain the MDA EHS programs to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and corporate policies.
- Participate in government agency field visits to understand applicable EHS regulations and ensure compliance.
- Serve as the management co-chair of the JHSC, ensuring OHSA, WSIB and regulatory compliance.
- Report regularly to the Operations or PA Director on EHS performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Drive the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) by promoting shared accountability for safety.
- Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs, policies, and procedures tailored to designated operations.
- Partner with other business areas to exchange best practices and ensure consistency in EHS standards.
- Lead internal and external health, safety and environmental audits; provide expert guidance.
- Lead PSRs (Pre-Start Health & Safety Reviews) or equivalents per provincial regulations for equipment, processes, and facility changes.
- Collaborate with facilities, operations and engineering during space planning to ensure regulatory compliance and EHS integration.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, hazard assessments and environmental impact reviews.
- Manage incident investigations with root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Monitor and report compliance to leadership, regulators, and customers.
- Track health and safety KPIs, communicate trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop EHS orientations, regulatory training, and behavioral safety coaching for employees and leaders.
- Engage teams to identify hazards, risks and sustainability opportunities.
- Foster a prevention-first, zero-injury culture through continuous improvement and behavioral safety programs.
- Support EMS, pollution prevention initiatives and sustainability projects; monitor environmental KPIs and regulatory compliance.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- EHS-related professional accreditation (e.g., CRSP, CIH, CHSC, CSP).
- Minimum of 9 years progressive EHS experience in industrial or engineering settings (7 years with a graduate degree).
- Demonstrated leadership in managing, developing, and motivating EHS professionals.
- Prior experience in aerospace, manufacturing, or industrial settings.
- Strong knowledge and application of OHSA, WSIB, Environmental Protection Act, and provincial Fire Code.
- Experience developing and implementing EHS management systems, including risk assessments, policies, and training programs.
- Experience serving as a JHSC co-chair and leading IRS initiatives.
- Advanced skills in incident and near-miss investigation, risk assessment, and root cause analysis.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
