Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Consultant to support environmental compliance, safety protocols, waste management, and site program execution at Toddville and related Duke Energy locations across the Carolinas. This role serves as a key environmental resource for facility personnel, business partners, and project teams by ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting safe and sustainable operations, and driving continuous improvement in EHS performance.
Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance and Permit Management
-
Lead and maintain comprehensive environmental compliance programs for Toddville and applicable satellite locations.
-
Oversee and maintain the Mecklenburg County Air Permit and associated air source inspections.
-
Manage Underground Storage Tank permit requirements for Toddville Garage’s five underground storage tanks, including inspections and recordkeeping.
-
Ensure full regulatory compliance across applicable environmental, safety, waste management, and site program requirements.

Plans, Programs, and Reporting
-
Develop, maintain, and update the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plan for Toddville.

Maintain the Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Plan and DOT Security Plan for Dangerous When Wet material stored on-site.
-
Prepare and submit required environmental reports, including the PCB Annual Document Log, SARA 311, Tier II reports, chemical inventory updates, and waste determinations.

Use SpheraCloud and related systems to manage environmental records, sample results, waste shipments, and reporting data for Carolinas operations
-
Inspections, Monitoring, and Site Program Management
-
Conduct scheduled inspections for SPCC, underground storage tanks, air sources, waste areas, erosion control, and other site environmental programs.
-
Oversee the Universal Waste program, including large handler requirements, aerosol and battery collections, and quarterly chemical inventory communications.

Waste Management
-
Manage or support hazardous, non-hazardous, universal, recyclable, PCB, asbestos, medical, low-level radioactive, and other regulated waste activities, including scheduling, manifesting, facilitating loading, completing paperwork, and documenting shipments in waste management system.

Coordinate vendor waste shipments for Toddville and applicable satellite locations.

Manage PCB soil loads, PCB transformer oil at all ppm levels, PCB articles, McGuire landfill loads, asbestos loads, medical waste, and low-level radioactive mixed waste shipments.

Coordinate recycling streams such as oil filters, lamps, scrap metal, fire extinguishers, used oil, cement, antifreeze, wood pallets, non-PCB capacitors, tires, and batteries.

Optimize waste management processes to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency, and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Stakeholder Support, Safety, and Continuous Improvement
-
Serve as the primary point of contact for shipping hazardous and non-hazardous manifested wastes for various Duke Energy sites in the Carolinas.

Collaborate with Toddville building personnel, Real Estate Services, site leadership, project teams, and contractors to address environmental needs and resolve emerging issues.
-
Attend pre-construction meetings and provide environmental guidance for site projects, erosion control concerns, and compliance planning.
-
Respond to spills and cleanup events, support incident documentation, and help identify corrective and preventive actions.
-
Pack chemicals as needed for Nuclear, RRE, Hydro, CC/CT, and other supported sites.

Promote a culture of safety, accountability, environmental responsibility, and continuous improvement across supported operations.

Required/Basic Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Science, Health and Safety, Engineering or Other Related Degree
-
Minimum 3 years related work experience
-
In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 7 year(s) related work experience
-
Desired Qualifications
-
Master's degree in Business, Science, Health and Safety, Engineering or Other Related Degree
-
In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience
-
Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional and/or CSP and/or QEP and/or CHMM and/or CIH
-
Additional Preferred Qualifications
-
HAZWOPER 40 Certification
-
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, waste management requirements, spill prevention, emergency preparedness and compliance documentation
-
Demonstrated ability to manage complex environmental compliance programs, inspections, reporting obligations, and waste shipments.
-
Proficiency with data management and reporting tools, including Sphera Cloud, or similar environmental management systems
-
Ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, influence others and provide practical EHS guidance in a dynamic operational environment

Working Conditions
-
Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility. On-site employees are also required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location, not greater than 50 miles one way.

Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard.
-
Inside warehouse and outside yard environment including all weather conditions and possibly extreme temperatures.

Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.

Field, work site, facility visitation required.

Vehicle travel involved to field location; typical travel safety factors

Lifting requirements of 50 pounds
