What you'll do

E&S Management System and Governance:

  • Own the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the corporate ESMS, aligned with the IFC Performance Standards and applicable national law.
  • Own the group E&S policy, the standards beneath it, and the country procedures that make them work locally.
  • Identify and assess environmental, social, health and safety risks for every site, activity and new project, refreshed on cycle and after any material change.
  • Maintain a live register of applicable E&S and HSE law, permits and licenses for every market.
  • Own the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) and the corrective action register, and drive closure to deadline.
  • Set ESMS performance indicators, monitor them, and run an annual management review of ESMS effectiveness.
  • Prepare E&S reporting to the Board, lenders, investors and regulators, including the annual monitoring report.

Social Risk Management:

  • Monitor compliance with IFC PS2 for employees and for workers engaged through agencies and contractors: terms of employment, working hours, wages, non-discrimination, freedom of association, and accommodation where provided.
  • Verify that a worker grievance mechanism is in place, accessible to employed and agency workers, and that cases are tracked and closed.
  • Assess the social risk of any retrenchment, and verify that it follows the PS2 requirements on alternatives, consultation and fair treatment.
  • Prevent and respond to gender-based violence and harassment, together with HR.
  • Assess and control the risks operations create for communities: delivery and site traffic, hazardous materials in transit and storage, and emergencies affecting neighbours.
  • Oversee security arrangements against IFC PS4: screening, training, rules of engagement and conduct of security personnel.
  • Check labor providers and the primary supply chain for child labor, forced labor and serious safety issues, and escalate immediately.

Stakeholder Engagement and Grievance:

  • Own the Stakeholder Engagement Plan: identify stakeholders per market, plan engagement, and record it.
  • Own the external grievance mechanism: accessible channels, defined response times, case log, resolution and feedback to the complainant.
  • Report on grievance volumes, themes and closure to Group leadership and in E&S reporting to lenders.
  • Disclose E&S information to affected stakeholders as the Stakeholder Engagement Plan requires.

Occupational Health and Safety:

  • Control warehouse and hub hazards: manual handling, racking and storage, work at height, mechanical handling equipment, pedestrian and vehicle segregation, electrical safety, heat and noise.
  • Control office hazards: workstation and display screen ergonomics, slips and trips, electrical equipment, ventilation, lighting, temperature and noise.
  • Run workstation assessments for office and remote workers, and track the corrective actions.
  • Assess psychosocial risk (workload, lone working, violence and harassment) together with HR, and put controls in place.
  • Run individual risk assessments for pregnant and nursing workers and for workers with a disability or medical restriction, across all sites.
  • Own the PPE standard, provided at no cost to the worker, with issue and replacement records.
  • Operate permit to work for hot work, work at height, confined space, electrical isolation and contractor works, in operational sites and offices alike.
  • Ensure first aid cover, health surveillance where the risk assessment requires it, and adequate sanitation and welfare facilities.
  • Control chemicals and dangerous goods, including lithium batteries, aerosols and flammables held in the network.

Fleet and Road Safety:

  • Own the road safety programme for owned, leased and third-party fleets: licence checks, rider and driver training, helmet and visibility standards, journey and speed management, load security.
  • Set roadworthiness and maintenance standards for vehicles and motorcycles, and verify them.
  • Investigate every collision, and track collision and injury rates against distance travelled or deliveries completed.
  • Set the travel safety standard for business travel between markets, including pre-travel risk checks, approved transport and hotels, and emergency contact procedures.

Fire, Emergency and Site Safety:

  • Maintain a fire risk assessment per site covering detection, suppression, escape routes, storage separation and fire load.
  • Produce and drill site emergency response plans, and close the actions each drill generates.
  • In shared or multi-tenant buildings, agree fire and evacuation arrangements with the landlord or building management, and verify them through joint drills.
  • Appoint and train fire wardens and first aiders in every office, sized to headcount and floor layout.
  • Verify structural integrity and life safety of leased buildings before occupation and periodically thereafter.
  • Coordinate with fire, medical and civil authorities.

Contractors, Agencies and Third Parties:

  • Apply the same E&S and HSE standard to agency, outsourced and contractor workers as to employees.
  • Pre-qualify, induct, audit and, where needed, disqualify contractors, labour providers, logistics partners and facilities providers (cleaning, catering, security, maintenance) on E&S and HSE grounds.
  • Write enforceable E&S and HSE requirements into tenders, contracts and service level agreements.

Environment and Waste:

  • Apply IFC PS3 on resource efficiency and pollution prevention across all sites.
  • Maintain a waste inventory and management plan per site, with licensed disposal contractors and complete manifests.
  • Manage IT and electronic waste through licensed contractors, with disposal certificates.
  • Track energy, fuel, water and generator consumption across operational sites and offices, set reduction targets, and compile emissions data for reporting.
  • Prevent pollution at source: fuel storage and bunding, drainage and effluent, air emissions, noise to neighbors.
  • Screen every new site, lease and operational change for environmental and social risk before commitment.

Incidents, Assurance and Capability:

  • Operate one incident reporting standard covering near misses, injuries, occupational illness, fires, environmental releases, collisions and security incidents.

  • Lead root cause investigation on serious and high-potential incidents, and verify that corrective actions worked.

  • Notify serious incidents to Group leadership, and to lenders where required, within the required period.

  • Run internal audits, host external, lender and certification audits, and close findings.

  • Deliver E&S and HSE induction for every new joiner, including agency and contractor staff.

  • Build and lead a network of country E&S and HSE focal points covering both operational sites and offices.

  • Make sure workers can raise a hazard without retaliation, and that stop work authority is understood and respected.

  • What you bring

Mandatory:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Safety, Social Science or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing the IFC Performance Standards and/or IFC-aligned ESMS requirements.
