Job title: Drill Operator
About the Role The Drill Operator role reports to the Geotechnical Construction Manager and focuses on geotechnical and environmental drilling for heavy civil projects. Travel to out-of-town and out-of-state sites is required as needed.
What You'll Do
- Perform daily checklists to ensure well control equipment is fully functional and up to date.
- Set up and operate gun drilling equipment, adjusting as needed to keep production in spec.
- Load reels of fiber optic cable on flex track 150 plow and drill holes per diagrams.
- Use hand and power tools to drill holes in various materials; read diagrams; cross-train in other departments.
- Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure based on rock or concrete conditions.
- Conduct equipment maintenance in shop/yard; install inclinometers and take soil samples.
- Monitor customer specifications to ensure all requirements are met; replace spindles and run accuracy checks.
- Operate multiple drilling machines (truck, track, ATV mount) and heavy equipment (graders, loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, backhoes).
- Signal and direct hoisting and movement to ensure worker and material safety.
- Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
What We're Looking For
- Willingness and ability to travel out-of-town/out-of-state as needed for work.
- English communication (verbal and written) and basic math (geometry, algebra).
- Ability to move across a construction site, climb ladders/inclines, operate heavy equipment, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Heavy physical activity and endurance; safety-conscious with knowledge of safety policies.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
- Experience: five or more years in heavy highway and civil construction as a Drill Operator.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements as required by assignments.
- Strong reading comprehension for diagrams and plans.
Nice to Have
- Cross-training in other departments.
- Experience with geotechnical and environmental drilling using HSA, air and mud rotary, and direct push equipment.
