About the Role The Director of Utility Plant Systems oversees the management and modernization of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, life-safety and Central Plant systems across Mercy University’s campus infrastructure. Under the Vice President for Operations and Facilities and the Executive Director for Facilities Management, this role leads technical design, contract development, and capital upgrades, while advancing sustainability efforts in climate and energy initiatives.

What You'll Do

• Develop mechanical, electrical and plumbing specifications and standards for campus construction activities.
• Review industry options and recommend components.
• Build a cross-functional working team within Operations and Facilities to develop and maintain standards, ensuring successful turnover of operational systems.
• Develop scopes of work, designs, specs, drawings and estimates for bidding; perform engineering calculations.
• Review consultant work and assist in quality reports and contract documents.
• Review and approve shop drawings and submittals; address questions related to contract documents.
• Perform on-site observations of projects; monitor design and construction quality; attend meetings and prepare reports.
• Monitor construction supervision and inspect projects; develop reports.
• Develop/ review technical mechanical and electrical reports, program studies, budgets and field surveys.
• Conduct independent investigations of complex problems related to utility plant infrastructure and systems; provide recommendations.
• Research and develop technical data to resolve design and construction problems.
• Assist in start-up and troubleshooting of electronic and digital controllers; review installations for energy conservation.
• Ensure code compliance; liaise with code enforcement agencies.
• Assist in administrative and project-management duties for Facilities Design and Construction.
• Utilize CAD and other computer-assisted design tools.
• Contribute to sustainability planning and climate initiatives, roadmap implementation for climate, learning, community and engagement.
• Assess and, with consultants, develop initiatives to reduce environmental footprint via sustainable practices.

What We're Looking For

• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or closely related field, and two years full-time work experience in design and construction and operation of institutional/commercial facilities; OR an associate’s degree and four years’ full-time work experience with relevant professional training and certification, and an understanding of higher education environments.
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Experience with computer assisted design systems, and field software including Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge and ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to mechanical, heating and ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical and life safety systems.

Nice to Have

• Experience with sustainability planning and climate action planning, energy conservation initiatives; ability to lead sustainability efforts.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: USD 98,000 – 124,000 annually. Additional benefits not specified in the posting.
