Job title: Director of Trial Advocacy

About the Role The University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law invites applications for a faculty position as Director of the Trial Advocacy program. The Director oversees the Trial Advocacy Program, teaches courses in Trial Advocacy and related doctrine, and leads the Mock Trial competition teams. Appointments may be tenured, tenure-track, or an indefinite contract, commensurate with experience and preferences. The position may involve sabbatical opportunities, research support, voting rights, and faculty governance responsibilities.

What You'll Do

  • Oversee the Trial Advocacy Program, including teaching courses in Trial Advocacy, other skills and related doctrine, and running the Mock Trial competition teams (courses include Trial Advocacy, Jury Selection, Expert Witness Testimony, Mock Trial Evidence, The Art of Plea Bargaining, and Taking and Defending Depositions).
  • Teach one or more doctrinal courses (such as Criminal Law, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, or Torts) as part of the teaching package.
  • Supervise and collaborate with other trial advocacy faculty in proposing and developing courses for the Trial Advocacy program; work with adjunct faculty who teach and coach mock trial.
  • Teach Mock Trial Evidence to all members of the Mock Trial team; participate in running the National Ethics Trial Competition.
  • Engage in scholarly research and writing; contribute to the intellectual life of the law school.
  • Report directly to the Associate Dean for Advocacy for administrative matters.
  • Qualified candidates may be considered for the Robert Eglet Endowed Chair in Trial Advocacy and the Noell M. Ferris Advocacy Professorship.

  • Experience in trial advocacy and related teaching; ability to lead a program and collaborate with adjunct faculty.
  • Demonstrated research and scholarly activity related to trial advocacy or related fields.
  • Ability to mentor students and teams in competitive settings and to contribute to the law school’s intellectual life.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to anti-racist initiatives within a law school environment.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Appointments may include tenure, tenure-track, or indefinite contract with security of position, sabbatical opportunities, research support, voting rights, and governance responsibilities.
  • Robert Eglet Endowed Chair in Trial Advocacy: a fully funded chair with stipend, double travel funds, and guaranteed writing grant.
  • Noell M. Ferris Advocacy Professorship: open to highly experienced contract faculty with additional compensation and benefits.
