Job title: Director, Engineering & Capital Projects
About the Role Reporting to the Senior Director of Facilities, the Director of Engineering and Capital Projects leads the programming, planning, design, and construction of capital projects and physical improvements at The Jackson Laboratory, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and effective management from concept through occupancy. This role oversees consultants and in-house design staff, and helps optimize campus space usage. The position is located in Bar Harbor, ME with travel to other JAX campuses as needed.
What You'll Do
- Oversee all activity on capital projects from feasibility analysis and programming through design, bidding, construction, and occupancy, including development of contract documents, budgets, bid solicitation and award to the lowest, responsive bidder, construction administration, site observation, budget management, and project close-out.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations across planning, design, and construction, including consultant selection and contract award, bonding, and insurance considerations.
- Coordinate with site Facilities Management teams for installation, commissioning, and occupancy, and work with Facilities Management to address facility-related problems on an ongoing basis.
- Develop and maintain departmental policies, guidelines, and design standards for the enterprise; communicate standards to consultants, contractors, and on-campus builders.
- Manage the Office of Engineering & Technical Services (greater than 10 staff), including staffing, performance management, training, assigning projects, and developing staff for higher responsibility.
- Lead the selection and onboarding of consultants for capital projects and oversee work of external firms and in-house staff throughout projects.
- Develop long-range and detailed plans to meet institutional needs and manage capital project budgets.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a directly related field (AIA or PE registration preferred or ability to become registered within 12 months).
- 15+ years of Facilities Engineering/Planning experience in an industrial/institutional setting, including 5+ years in a technical supervisory capacity; experience identifying program needs, guiding design, managing multi-million-dollar construction projects, and observing construction.
- Knowledge of architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil systems; strong knowledge of building codes, contract language, and applicable statutes; familiarity with California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maine is beneficial.
- Strong management and decision-making skills with ability to analyze information and make recommendations to senior management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with diverse communities and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with PC and Facilities/Project Management software (Windows, AutoCAD, MS Office, MS Project or Primavera, Timberline, e-Builder).
Nice to Have
- Construction industry experience within an institutional research environment is preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $136,461 - $228,467 per year.
