About the Role Rutgers University–Newark seeks a Director, Counseling Center to lead clinical and administrative operations of the Counseling Center, directing mental health services for over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Health & Wellness, the role involves supervising clinicians and staff, crisis response, policy development, and collaboration with campus health professionals and campus committees to support student well-being.
What You'll Do
- Direct clinical and support staff and all administrative activities related to the provision and management of mental health services for students.
- Be available to respond to urgent student mental health situations outside normal business hours, including after-hours crisis intervention and occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.
- Evaluate and treat students for developmental and psychological/emotional difficulties.
- Direct campus outreach programs; consult with staff, faculty, and students.
- Maintain liaison relationships with health professionals at the Student Health Services.
- Provide leadership in formulating campus policies on psychological issues.
- Recruit, select, train and supervise clinicians, professional staff and graduate students in mental health fields.
- Conduct research relevant to the needs of the student population.
- Serve as a key member of the Campus Awareness Response and Education Team and Threat Assessment and Safety Committee.
What We're Looking For
- Licensed clinician with leadership experience directing clinical and support staff in a mental health services program.
- Experience directing mental health services for a diverse student population and ensuring high-quality care.
- Ability to respond to urgent mental health situations outside normal business hours (after-hours crisis intervention).
- Strong collaboration and consultation skills with staff, faculty, students, and campus health professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, train and supervise clinicians, professional staff, and graduate students in mental health fields.
- Experience in policy development related to campus psychological issues and mental health.
- Capacity to conduct and apply research relevant to student mental health needs.
- Willingness to participate as a member of campus safety-related committees such as CARE Team and Threat Assessment and Safety Committee.
