Job title: Diesel Locomotive Mechanic
About the Role Union Pacific is seeking an experienced mechanic to service and repair diesel locomotives. The role focuses on the safe, efficient maintenance of locomotives in compliance with company and federal standards, contributing to reliable transportation across North America.
What You'll Do
- Efficiently operate equipment including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment, e.g., forklifts, cranes and overhead hoists
- Communicate technical information, job briefs, procedures, and other work-related information verbally, in writing, by telephone, radio, and intercom
- Read and interpret diagrams, schematics, graphs and charts, and input data into a computer as needed
- Ensure all equipment or materials are available and ready for use as needed
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and handle controversy effectively
- Ensure compliance with railroad safety, operations, and FRA regulations
- Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other locomotive mechanical systems
- Repair, replace or rebuild locomotive parts as needed
- Inspect and service diesel locomotives fleet within compliance of company, federal, and industry standards
- Perform other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For
- Must be 18 years of age or older; valid driver's license
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with colleagues and supervisors
- At least 4 years of education or work experience as a mechanic repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, or diesels; or hold a current journeyman's mechanical card
- Experience in conducting quick and accurate visual inspections at varying distances
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents
- Willingness to relocate and work at designated locations; commitment to practicing safe work habits
- Ability to successfully complete an assessment in English before interview
Nice to Have
- ASE diesel mechanic certification or license
- Formal auto/diesel engine training program (community college, trade/vocational school, or military)
- Associate's degree in a mechanical-related field
- Experience in diverse fields such as military, aviation, nuclear, or marine
- Welding certification or welding experience
- Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions
- Prior experience working around moving heavy equipment and PPE usage
- Willingness to work in confined spaces and on-site at varied shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $41.07 per hour (hourly pay)
