About the Role
Design Engineer II - Accessories serves as the lead design engineer and technical resource within cross-functional teams for Milwaukee Tool's NPD Accessories business unit. You will design, analyze, and develop cutting, drilling, driving, masonry, and abrasive accessories, partnering with Project Management, Engineering, Quality, Product Management, Operations, and Supply Chain. This on-site role emphasizes disruptive innovation and hands-on engineering leadership to bring big breakthroughs to users.
What You'll Do
- Act as the lead design engineer and technical resource within cross-functional project teams across New Product Development, Continuous Improvement, Value Engineering, and Product Support specifically within the NPD Accessories unit.
- Solve engineering problems using 3D Modeling & Drafting; Manufacturing/Process Methods; Materials Science; Statics, Dynamics, and Stress Analysis; structured experimentation; root cause analysis; robust design; and design optimization. Establish test regimens, submit test requests to internal labs, and deliver complete data analysis to support design recommendations.
- Prepare and present large mechanical engineering milestone reviews for peer and management review.
- Perform analyses and gather data to drive trade-off decisions across performance, cost, complexity, and schedule; provide data-driven recommendations.
- Help qualify new suppliers (international and domestic) for prototyping, development, NPD, and other supply chain needs; travel will be required.
- Interact daily with suppliers, quality, and manufacturing to develop new products and processes and to support/improve current ones.
- Provide support for engineering changes including reservation and release of new part numbers and bill of materials.
- Plan and prioritize technical tasks to keep projects on schedule; manage cross-functional contributions; may require up to 20% time on project management.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineers; maintain a positive, collaborative attitude.
- Balance workload across multiple accessory projects of varying complexity; foresee upcoming deliverables and milestones.
- May perform other duties as assigned to support broader business needs.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Typically 2-3 years of experience in New Product Development or equivalent.
- Proficient at 3D Modeling and Drafting.
- Working knowledge of FEA (ANSYS preferred).
- Working knowledge of statistical analysis software (Minitab preferred).
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Mechanical aptitude with knowledge of design, engineering materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Highly motivated self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset; able to adapt in a fast-changing environment.
- Ability to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.
Nice to Have
- Preferred: FEA/ANSYS experience and Minitab familiarity.
- Experience collaborating in cross-functional teams and supplier qualification.
