About the Role Deputy Prosecuting Attorney I-IV provides legal representation to prosecute individuals accused of crimes in District, Juvenile, or Superior Court. Civil deputies advise and represent County departments; the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney IV handles the most complex civil and criminal matters. This is a career progression series with advancement based on minimum qualifications and performance. What You'll Do
- Review and evaluate factual and legal bases of cases; direct investigations as needed; determine charging decisions for criminal matters and file charges; civil matters involve consultation with county policymakers.
- Prepare cases: legal research, evidence review, witness interviews, drafting documents; develop case strategy; organize exhibits; prepare for hearings and trials.
- Evaluate cases for disposition; negotiate plea or settlement with opposing counsel; maintain professional relationships to facilitate resolution.
- Communicate with victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and stakeholders; coordinate participation and connect individuals with services; collaborate with departments and outside agencies.
- Work with Division of Child Support to secure and enforce financial support obligations for children through legal advocacy and collection efforts. (Civil Division, Child Support).
- Assist and train support staff; perform other duties. What We're Looking For
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; license to practice law in the State of Washington; in good standing with the Washington State Bar; valid WA Driver’s License if driving for county business.
- Minimum experience: DPA I: one year criminal law experience and/or internship; DPA II: three years; DPA III: five; DPA IV: ten (or any combination of education and experience).
- DPA I: Trial advocacy training preferred.
- Knowledge of Washington state criminal and civil law, procedures, evidence, and local regulations; ability to conduct legal research and analysis; strong communication and negotiation skills; ability to work with law enforcement and county departments.
- Ability to handle cases of varying complexity and provide civil and criminal legal advice as required (DPA II–IV). Nice to Have
- Trial advocacy training (preferred for DPA I). Compensation & Benefits
- Pay grades: DPA I 150; DPA II 155; DPA III 160; DPA IV 165 (USD per year).
