About the Role The Deputy General Counsel will support UPTE-CWA 9119’s California-wide organizing, bargaining, and representation as the union’s in-house legal counsel. The role focuses on PERB matters, state and federal litigation, and arbitrations, with additional duties in contract negotiations, strategy development, training, and member-leader counsel.
What You'll Do
- Represent the union in PERB, state and federal litigation, and arbitrations.
- Support contract negotiations, draft contract language and requests for information, and consult on bargaining strategy.
- Develop and implement a union-wide legal strategy and program; prepare legal documents for hearings before PERB, courts, and arbitrators.
- Provide training for staff and member leaders.
- Provide support and counsel to member leaders and bargaining teams on strategic, representational, organizing, and bargaining issues.
- Coordinate with outside legal counsel.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum of three years of experience as a practicing attorney in labor law; public sector experience preferred.
- Juris Doctor (JD) and active CA state bar membership.
- Experience in administrative proceedings and/or arbitration hearings.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, communication, legal research, writing, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to work with diverse groups and commitment to building a Militant, Progressive, and Democratic labor movement.
Nice to Have
- Public sector experience (preferred).
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting salary range of $155,000 – $195,000, commensurate with experience.
