About this role

Job title: Deputy Editor, Physical Science

About the Role We are seeking a dynamic and ambitious Deputy Editor with a PhD in the physical sciences and a strong background in applied physics, electronics, or photonics to join our in‑house editorial team, with a particular focus on the growing Open Access flagship journal Advanced Physics Research. The Deputy Editor will work closely with the Editor‑in‑Chief to raise the journal’s profile and visibility within the community, attract high‑quality submissions, and engage leading researchers worldwide. The Deputy Editor is expected to participate actively in conferences, institute visits, and broader outreach activities, as well as to manage the peer‑review process and make editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts. Ensuring the adoption of best practices and the highest ethical standards in publishing is a core responsibility of the role.

What You'll Do

  • Strategically develop one or more journals, in collaboration with the Editor‑in‑Chief, from both scientific and publishing perspectives within the broader physical sciences journal portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with authors, peer reviewers, and editorial board members.
  • Leverage subject‑matter expertise, professional networks, awareness of field developments, and desk research to drive content acquisition and submissions growth.
  • Represent Wiley and the physical sciences portfolio at conferences and through in‑person and virtual outreach activities at universities and research institutes.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across departments to support the development and growth of the journal portfolio.
  • Contribute to editorial assessment, peer‑review management, and decision‑making for manuscripts submitted to one or more journals.
  • Participate in conferences, institute visits, and broader outreach activities to raise the journal’s reputation and impact.

What We're Looking For

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline; a background in applied physics, electronics, or photonics is a strict requirement.
  • Two or more years of post‑PhD experience (postdoctoral, industrial, academic, publishing, and/or international experience is beneficial but not essential).
  • A strong publication record and a deep understanding of the physical sciences research landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and to achieve results through personal influence and engagement.
  • A self‑motivated, diplomatic, and flexible approach, with excellent organizational, efficiency, and time‑management skills, and a strong command of written and spoken English.
  • A solid understanding of scientific publishing, including commissioning and the peer‑review process; prior experience in publishing, editorial work, or science communication, together with familiarity with Open Access workflows and Open Research practices, is highly desirable.
  • A keen interest in science and science communication, and a strong motivation to advocate for innovation in scholarly publishing and open research.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Open Access workflows and Open Research practices is highly desirable.
