Deputy Director, Center for Public Health Systems (CPHS)

About the Role The Deputy Director at Columbia University's Center for Public Health Systems (CPHS) will serve as the center's primary administrative leader, guiding operations, external relationships, and program development for a new center dedicated to advancing public health systems research, policy, and practice. Working closely with Center Director Michael Sparer, the role blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution to build infrastructure, establish priorities, and raise the center's national visibility. What You'll Do

• Center Administration & Operations: oversee day-to-day administration, governance, and cross-team coordination to ensure efficient operations.
• Programs & Initiative Oversight: guide development and implementation of programs and partnerships.
• Communications: manage external communications, reports, and public-facing materials.
• Development: contribute to fundraising and external partnerships.
• Monitoring, Evaluation & Impact: track outcomes and inform strategic decisions.
• Research Management: supervise research activities and workflows.
• Budget: oversee budgeting and financial planning.
• Other: perform additional duties as needed to support the center's growth. What We're Looking For
• Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and at least four years of work experience.
• Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in public health, public policy, health administration, or related field (MPH strongly preferred); 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in public health, health policy, academia, government, consulting, or related sectors; demonstrated experience managing programs, partnerships, or organizational operations in complex multi-stakeholder environments; experience working with public health agencies, government partners, or national associations; strong operational, financial, and project management skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills for academic, policy, and practitioner audiences; comfort operating in an early-stage, entrepreneurial academic environment; experience in local or state health departments; familiarity with state and local public health governance structures; experience translating research into practice or policy tools; background in partnership development, fundraising, convening, or field-building initiatives. Nice to Have
• Optional/preferred qualifications as mentioned in the posting include: Advanced degree (MPH or related) and 10+ years of experience in public health or health policy; demonstrated success in building strategic partnerships, fundraising, and field-building initiatives; familiarity with local/state governance structures. Compensation & Benefits
• Salary range: $120,500.00 - $150,000.00 per year.
• Hours per week: 35.
