About the Role

The Deputy Coroner investigates and determines cause and manner of death in accordance with state statute, identifies the deceased and next of kin, and assists families. This role reports to the Chief Deputy Coroner and involves varied, complex work under supervision.

What You'll Do

  • Respond to calls relating to sudden deaths where a physician was not in attendance or circumstances are questionable.
  • Confer with police, doctors, hospital staff, first responders, families, witnesses, insurers, attorneys, and the media.
  • Examine the place of death for evidence related to cause, manner, and identity of the deceased.
  • Collect, preserve, and store property/evidence with proper chain of custody.
  • Attend autopsies and supply the forensic pathologist with case facts.
  • Collect toxicology samples and conduct on-site testing.
  • Identify next of kin and notify them; aid families as needed.
  • Prepare written reports, complete death certificates, and conduct external examinations.
  • Attend depositions and court hearings providing relevant information and testimony.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum: Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Nursing, Biology, or related field; or 1 year of verifiable work experience in medical, nursing, coroner/medical examiner, EMS/paramedic, autopsy, or investigative field.
  • Investigative experience includes researching information, interviewing individuals, and preparing detailed reports for governmental or related agencies.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology; basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong communication skills, especially in stressful situations; ability to provide comfort to grieving individuals.
  • Ability to observe death scenes, take detailed notes, analyze problems, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  • Ability to work in high-stress situations and travel as needed; ability to operate passenger cars or trucks safely; maintain effective working relationships.

Nice to Have

  • Death Investigator certification (WA CJTC)
  • Membership with the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME)
  • Diplomate status with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: PW12 Steps 2-4: $4,804.62 - $5,253.51; Longevity Steps 5-8: $5,494.92 - $6,294.03 (monthly)
