About this role
Database Developer
Staff Database Engineer This Staff Database Engineer will play a key role in modernizing a large, multi-tenant database environment, with particular focus on Couchbase, large-scale migrations, AWS database technologies, data pipelines, and production reliability. This is a hands-on Staff-level role requiring both deep technical expertise and the ability to guide architecture and migration strategy.
What You'll Do
- Lead large-scale database migrations involving TB+ datasets, including planning, data validation, replication, cutover, rollback, and risk mitigation.
- Evaluate existing Couchbase workloads and determine whether they should remain on Couchbase or migrate to DynamoDB, DocumentDB, or another database platform based on access patterns, scale, performance, and cost.
- Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Couchbase XDCR or comparable replication technologies, including replication failures, lag, and performance issues.
- Design database strategies for complex multi-tenant environments with varying customer sizes, traffic patterns, and performance requirements.
- Architect and support cloud database solutions primarily within AWS, utilizing technologies such as DynamoDB, DocumentDB, RDS, DMS, Glue, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
- Design, build, and support ETL/ELT pipelines feeding Snowflake or similar modern data platforms, including data validation, backfills, recovery, and troubleshooting.
- Use Python and SQL for automation, data processing, database operations, and workflow orchestration.
- Take ownership of production database incidents, from troubleshooting and recovery through root-cause analysis and preventative improvements.
- Establish proactive monitoring, alerting, and performance strategies using Datadog, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or similar observability tools.
- Serve as a technical leader, partnering with engineering teams on database architecture, migrations, performance, reliability, and platform strategy.
What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of database, data engineering, or database architecture experience in large production environments.
- Hands-on Couchbase experience, ideally including large-scale migrations and XDCR.
- Strong understanding of NoSQL/document databases, particularly Couchbase, DynamoDB, and/or DocumentDB.
- Experience working with large, multi-tenant and distributed database environments.
- Proven experience performing complex database migrations, including replication, validation, cutover, and production stabilization.
- Strong AWS database and data-platform experience.
- Experience building or supporting Snowflake ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Strong Python and SQL skills.
- Hands-on production troubleshooting, performance tuning, monitoring, and incident response experience.
- Ability to operate at a Staff level, combining hands-on engineering with architecture, technical decision-making, and mentorship.
- Biggest priority: We are looking for someone who has actually worked hands-on with Couchbase/NoSQL at scale, understands replication and migration complexity, and can help evaluate and safely transition workloads within a large production environment.
