About the Role The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech seeks a Data Analysis and Web Visualization Specialist to support data analysis, visualization, and communication for research, teaching, and outreach projects. The role includes developing and maintaining web-based tools and displays and updating departmental online assets.
What You'll Do
- Assist faculty, staff, and graduate students with data analysis, visualization, and communication for research, teaching, and outreach projects.
- Develop and support web-based tools and displays, including interactive tools such as R Shiny.
- Maintain and modernize departmental online assets and web content.
- Develop and deliver training and provide consultation on data analysis workflows, visualization, and digital tools.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in a field related to data analysis, information technology, instructional technology, natural resources, or related discipline; or equivalent training/experience.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and visualize quantitative and qualitative data.
- Experience with data analysis/visualization tools such as R, R Shiny, Python, spreadsheets; ability to update and maintain web-based content or digital resources.
- Strong written and oral English communication; ability to work with individuals of varying technical backgrounds; ability to provide user support and training.
Nice to Have
- Advanced degree or relevant experience in related discipline.
- Experience developing interactive dashboards, web applications, or data visualization tools for research, teaching, or outreach.
- Experience with Enterprise Content Management Systems, HTML/CSS, web accessibility, and digital communications best practices.
- Experience with environmental, forestry, natural resources, or geospatial data.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $65,000 per year. Overtime status: Non-Exempt. Hours per week: 40.
- Location: Blacksburg, Virginia. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal conviction check.
