About the Role Under the supervision of the department supervisor, the Cut-Off Operator (60 Code) cuts sprues, risers and gates from castings; cuts bar stock and revert metal to length; trims castings as required; uses abrasive cutoff machines; sets up and adjusts holding fixtures; receives instructions and assignments from the foreperson.

What You'll Do

  • Operate abrasive cutoff machines (generally 20 inch wheel capacity or smaller) to cut through metal at designated point, placing castings, bar stock or revert metal on the machine table or in holding fixtures and applying manual pressure as needed.
  • Remove castings, bar stock and revert metal from fixtures at the end of the operation and place in the proper container or on the floor.
  • Check for proper cutoff using rulers or gauges and adjust as necessary.
  • Push carts of castings to and from work and storage areas to maintain workflow.
  • Change and adjust holding fixtures; replace abrasive cutoff wheel or saw blade as needed.
  • Sign off routing cards as required and report faulty products and processes to the foreperson.
  • Keep the work area clean and orderly.
  • Perform other duties related to the job as directed by the foreperson.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED; at least one year manufacturing experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions and procedures; ability to communicate production information both in writing and verbally; ability to complete required production reports.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Reasoning ability: ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions; ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
  • Regular attendance and the ability to work weekday and weekend overtime.
  • Physical demands: stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach; frequently lift up to 50 pounds; lifting above 50 pounds with lift assist or help; specific vision abilities include ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: frequently exposed to humid conditions; occasionally exposed to fumes; high noise level; PPE required.
  • Language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures; ability to communicate production information both in writing and verbally; ability to complete required production reports.
