Custodian

Colgate University is hiring a full-time Custodian to join the Facilities - Custodial Services team in Hamilton, NY. This on-site role supports the Finance and Administration division and requires working at the designated campus location. The position is paid at $20.47 per hour and may require hours beyond a normal schedule as needed. The successful candidate will be able to work independently or as part of a team, demonstrate effective communication, and provide strong customer service while interacting daily with students in a positive, professional, and friendly manner.

Responsibilities include: performing cleaning tasks according to standard methods and procedures, using a range of cleaning equipment and tools, and following safety guidelines. You will be expected to wear required personal protective equipment and adapt to a diverse environment that includes students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The role also requires basic computer skills and the ability to learn and use Gmail, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the FAMIS work order/time card management system to manage assignments and documentation. The position may demand flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and overtime when necessary and entails contributing to a safe work environment by following all procedures.

Requirements include: a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Possession of a current, valid driver’s license may be required for certain opportunities in accordance with university policy. Applicants should be able to carry up to 50 pounds, operate machinery and power tools safely, and work in extreme elements including inclement weather and low-temperature facilities. Manual snow removal may be required. The role involves handling heavy equipment such as industrial vacuum cleaners, shampooers, and buffers, as well as containers like trash bags and cans. Physical tasks include bending, reaching, and standing for long periods, with the ability to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed. Candidates should be comfortable interacting with a diverse campus population daily and be prepared to follow all safety procedures and wear PPE as required. Previous custodial experience in an educational setting, knowledge of standard cleaning methods, and experience using cleaning equipment, chemicals, and tools are preferred.
