Critical Environment Operations - Night Shift

Role Overview

The Critical Environment Technician maintains and operates the critical infrastructure behind Microsoft’s global data centers. The role ensures the reliability of services such as Microsoft Azure, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Bing by maintaining electrical, mechanical, cooling, and facility systems.

The technician works hands-on with equipment, monitors system performance, performs maintenance, manages vendors, and responds to operational incidents to keep Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure running 24/7.

Main Responsibilities

Safety & Compliance

• Follow Microsoft safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Identify unsafe conditions and stop work when necessary.
• Participate in safety training, meetings, and operational handovers.
• Work extended shifts in environments with noise, heat, and equipment activity.
• Support emergency response procedures.

Critical Infrastructure Maintenance

• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on:

• Electrical systems.

• Mechanical systems.

• HVAC and cooling equipment.

• Building management systems.

• Fire/life safety systems.

• Follow:

• SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).

• MOPs (Methods of Procedure).

• DMOPs (Digital Methods of Procedure).

• Troubleshoot equipment failures and perform repairs.

• Document maintenance activities and equipment issues.

Vendor & Contractor Management

• Escort and supervise external contractors and suppliers.
• Ensure vendor work follows safety standards and approved procedures.
• Review work orders, reports, and service documentation.
• Coordinate maintenance schedules and site activities.

Monitoring & Operations

• Monitor data center systems using:

• Telemetry platforms.

• Control systems.

• CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).

• Analyze equipment performance and identify abnormal trends.

• Respond to alarms and operational issues.

• Perform inspections and validate equipment performance.

• Support incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.

Technical Leadership

• Serve as a subject matter expert for critical environment systems.
• Support and train junior technicians.
• Develop operational procedures and improvement recommendations.
• Assist with testing, commissioning, and system inspections.

Working Conditions

• Night shift position.

• 12-hour shifts, including:

• Nights.

• Weekends.

• Holidays.

• Up to 25% travel may be required.

• Physical requirements include:

• Standing for long periods.

• Climbing stairs/ladders.

• Occasional lifting of equipment.

• Working around high-noise and high-temperature environments.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

• 4+ years of mission-critical infrastructure experience, such as:

• Data centers.

• Manufacturing facilities.

• Hospitals.

• Oil & gas facilities.

• Pharmaceutical environments.

• High-availability operations.

• Fluent English communication skills.

• Ability to pass Microsoft security and cloud background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree or technical certification (electrical, mechanical, military, trade school, etc.).

• 5+ years of mission-critical facility experience.

• Experience in:

• Electrical systems.

• HVAC systems.

• Cloud infrastructure.

• Facility operations.

• Equipment troubleshooting.
