Description

  • The School of the Arts Creative Media and Technology Manager serves as the central operational and technical hub for technology, equipment, and infrastructure across the School of the Arts divisions: Music, Theatre and Dance, Architecture and Interior Design, Art and Design, and Christian Ministry. This position manages specialized computer labs, audio and visual systems, fabrication labs, and performance technology that support program-specific instruction and creative work.

  • The Creative Media and Technology Manager works collaboratively with faculty experts, program directors and coordinators, division chairs, SOA staff, Performance Venues production staff, and campus IT to ensure equipment operates efficiently, coordinate maintenance and repairs, research and recommend capital equipment purchases, and maintain clear boundaries between program-specific technology (SOA responsibility) and campus IT infrastructure (IT responsibility). For events requiring live production support, AVL, or archival recording, the Creative Media and Technology Manager serves as the SOA’s coordination point with Performance Venues.

  • The Creative Media and Technology Manager ensures that all technical resources across the school are functional, maintained, current, and well managed.

  • Job Duties

  • Technology Infrastructure & Lab Management

  • Oversee all program-specific computer and technology labs across the School of the Arts — dedicated instructional and creative spaces rather than general-use labs — spanning music technology, architecture/interior design, and art and design (including 2D/3D and animation software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD/Revit, and tools like Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, Substance Painter, and ZBrush).

  • Ensure all lab hardware, software, and specialized equipment is functional, current, and properly maintained, including software and plugin installation/updates across tech lab computers.

  • Maintain working knowledge of the specialized technology used in each division and serve as the school’s go-to technical resource for faculty, staff, and program directors.

  • Recruit, train, and provide ongoing oversight of work-study student lab monitors (e.g., Game Design and Music labs).

  • Audio, Visual & Performance Technology

  • Support classroom and installed audio, visual, and lighting systems across divisions; production-specific equipment and mainstage show support remain the responsibility of production/design faculty and Performance Venues.

  • Support the maintenance, readiness, and coordination of sound reinforcement and live sound systems used by ensembles and events.

  • Serve as the coordination point for repair and service of AV, lighting, and sound equipment.

  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with frequency and bandwidth regulations affecting wireless microphone systems and related equipment.

  • Coordinate archival audio/video recording and AVL support for SOA performances and events, serving as the SOA liaison to Performance Venues for venues such as Harrison Theatre, Brock Recital Hall, Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center, and Reid Chapel.

  • Coordinate specialized equipment check-out and loan systems for student use, including sign-out documentation and timely return.

  • Fabrication & Specialized Facilities

  • Manage fabrication labs and specialized creative facilities across divisions — including 3D printers, laser cutters, plotters, large-format printers, letterpresses, screen printing equipment, the sculpture studio and wood shop, and specialized recording/production spaces.

  • Manage inventory of consumables (e.g., ink, paper, materials).

  • Coordinate vendor service and repair for fabrication and specialized equipment.

  • Support ongoing facility upgrade projects as assigned.

  • Capital Budgeting & Procurement

  • Research, evaluate, and recommend capital equipment purchases, providing pricing, alternatives, and brand or vendor options.

  • Receive equipment and technology requests from faculty and bring recommendations to program directors, chairs, and the Dean.

  • Serve as the school’s structured intake point for technology and equipment needs.

  • IT Coordination

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the School of the Arts and campus IT.

  • Coordinate with IT on software approvals, upgrades, and any changes touching the campus network, testing in the SOA environment under IT authorization before mass rollout.

  • Advise IT on the infrastructure required to support specialized SOA technology so audio interfaces, networked equipment, and computers integrate seamlessly.

  • Bring demonstrated experience managing specialized software within an institutional IT infrastructure, working within IT-defined requirements and recommendations for the role.

  • Cross-Divisional Partnership

  • Partner regularly with program directors and coordinators, alongside faculty experts and chairs, as the primary working relationship for day-to-day, program-specific technology needs in each division.

  • Keep the Dean and division chairs informed of technology needs, risks, and capital priorities across the school.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience managing technology, equipment, or technical operations, ideally in an academic, arts, or production environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing specialized software within an institutional IT infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of audio, visual, and computer-based systems in arts disciplines.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage inventory, vendor relationships, and competing priorities across multiple programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, program directors, staff, chairs, and IT.
  • Fluency across both Apple and PC platforms.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software and hardware across divisions, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Adobe Creative Suite, CAD/Revit, Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, Substance Painter, ZBrush, and fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull equipment weighing 50 to 100 pounds
  • Capacity to maintain physical and mental focus during long shifts
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours continuously
  • Ability to tolerate loud noises/flashing lights, and theatrical haze.
  • Ability to kneel, climb, stoop, bend and reach into tight spaces.
  • Ability to traverse campus for long distances on a regular basis.
  • Ability to attend in person, virtual, and telephone meetings and to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work continuously throughout the day, remaining in a seated position for extended periods of time.
