Counsel

Travelers Counsel position based in Utah, Salt Lake City (hybrid remote/work arrangement). The role offers a nationwide base salary range of $106,300 to $175,400, with actual compensation determined by factors such as experience, scope and location, plus eligibility for performance-based incentives. You will join a national legal organization with a local focus, handling litigation arising from claims asserted against policyholders or the company, from inception through trial and appeal. You will manage a caseload that is predominantly low to moderate in complexity and provide high-quality, proactive case handling and legal guidance to insured clients and claim partners.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply litigation skills to try cases to verdict or negotiate resolutions.
• Conduct legal research and demonstrate strong and persuasive legal writing and presentation skills.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery and other documents.
• Attend court events, depositions, and other appointments independently.
• Provide case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claim partners on file handling strategies.
• Build and maintain strong internal and external client and business partner relationships.
• Provide advice and training to Claim partners and clients.
• Fully and effectively utilize available technology, case management systems and automation.
• Travel as required to meet business needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in the required state(s).
• 2+ years of experience as a practicing attorney (insurance defense preferred).
• Experience independently handling cases from inception through trial/hearing and appeal.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to present information on litigated matters to diverse audiences.
• Ability to foster collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners to deliver exceptional customer service.
• Persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills; strong legal research abilities.
• Effective multi-tasking with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness; sound decision-making and negotiation skills.
• Flexible and agile mindset with willingness to take on evolving challenges.
• Regular ability to transport to hearings, depositions, trials, or other court proceedings; valid driver’s license may be required depending on location.
