Job title: Corrections Officer

About the Role The Benton County Corrections Department seeks a Corrections Officer to perform inmate intake, custody, transport and care in accordance with established policies and procedures, focusing on the health, welfare, safety and security of inmates, staff and visitors.

What You'll Do

  • Receive and process new inmates, perform searches, record personal articles, review commitment orders, photographs and placement in cells per procedures.
  • Input and update incident, arrest, inmate and statistical records to meet legal requirements.
  • Respond to emergencies, maintain safety and security; use force when necessary and in line with laws and policies.
  • Escort inmates in transit to court appearances, hospitals or other facilities; coordinate court documents and update related information.
  • Monitor electronic surveillance; observe inmate, trustee and visitor movement to maintain facility security and access control.
  • Inspect jail facilities for security and cleanliness; arrange for release of inmates per procedures.
  • Prepare written reports on inmate population and jail operations; provide security for contractors and service providers.
  • Answer inquiries from inmates, staff and the public within scope of authority; maintain proficiency with related equipment; assist in training new officers as needed; perform other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required (additional education encouraged).
  • Certifications: First Aid and CPR; WA CJTC Corrections Officer Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Other Requirements: Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Knowledge: Principles and techniques of inmate care, custody and control; familiarity with relevant law enforcement concepts; basic computer skills.
  • Skills: Problem solving, use of relevant equipment, vehicles and firearms; strong communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Abilities: Physically able to handle inmates; stay ready to respond to abnormal jail conditions; administer first aid; perform duties with professional conduct; read, write and speak English; build effective working relationships; work allocated hours including overtime as needed.
