Position Information

Job Title Coordinator of First-Year Writing (Internal Hire)

Position Summary

Incoming college students face an increasingly complex set of academic challenges, from widening gaps in post-secondary writing readiness to the rapid integration of emerging technologies like generative AI. Mandatory introductory composition courses ENG 1301 and ENG 1302 serve as the foundation for undergraduate academic success, critical thinking, and institutional retention.

To ensure instructional consistency, elevate course quality, and systematically track student learning outcomes, the director will provide dedicated pedagogical leadership, comprehensive programmatic assessment, and targeted faculty mentorship, serving as a vital bridge between first-year academic initiatives and institutional student success goals.

The person in this position will be Director of First-Year Writing and teach 3 courses each semester.

The Director of First-Year Writing will address key institutional priorities by:

  • Bridging the Readiness Divide: Supporting incoming students as they transition from high school to rigorous, college-level critical thinking, research, and writing.
  • Standardizing Core Curriculum Quality: Ensuring programmatic consistency and equitable learning standards across all sections of ENG 1301 and ENG 1302.
  • Empowering Faculty: Providing robust onboarding, continuous pedagogical development, and instructional mentorship—especially for adjunct instructors.
  • Driving Data-Informed Retention: Connecting writing assessment data directly to institutional persistence strategies and general education outcomes.
