Job title: Controls Systems Engineer
About the Role Join Johnson Matthey as a Controls Systems Engineer (SCE) based in Royston, UK. You will design, install and maintain equipment and software on PLC and SCADA systems to monitor and control the plant operations, and contribute to project design, MOC actions, and process safety activities.
What You'll Do
- Support project teams at initial design stages with software and controls equipment selections to improve plant reliability and maintainability.
- Design, develop, install, manage and/or maintain equipment and software as required.
- Implement and continually review the controls strategy to meet current and future business needs.
- Implement standards for alarm management and safety-related control functions to deliver process safety.
- Provide expert knowledge of PLC systems (Omron and Allen-Bradley preferred).
- Provide expert knowledge of SCADA systems (Wonderware InTouch and Ignition preferred).
- Lead completion of software-related breakdowns and reactive plant support.
- Monitor and maintain the controls network infrastructure (server health, data replication/backup verification, IACS database administration).
What We're Looking For
- Hold a formal Electronic/Controls qualification (Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent).
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, modification, and fault-finding across Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and Omron (CS1/CJ series).
- Proficient in Studio 5000 / RS Logix 5000 and CX-Programmer.
- Competent in commissioning, testing, and maintaining Industrial Control Systems in a live production environment.
- Experience integrating PLCs with SCADA/HMI Systems, including Intouch (Wonderware), Ignition (Inductive Automation) and FactoryTalk View SE/ME (Rockwell).
- Skilled in diagnosing communication issues across Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus and Omron FINS networks.
- Able to work in a site-based environment with occasional visits to different operational areas.
