Job Description: We are looking for an experienced Controls Engineer with a special purpose machinery background, ideally within the packaging industry. The role involves producing PLC and HMI code for the equipment and production lines that we supply, working closely with mechanical and electrical design to ensure project requirements are fulfilled in a timely and cost-effective manner, and providing an exceptional customer experience by achieving Operational Excellence goals of on-time shipment, zero warranty and vertical start-ups at customer facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support and promote good teamwork within and outside of engineering, and act in line with the company’s policies and values. Responsible for the design and development of new control systems, upgrading of existing equipment and integration with new automation and controls. Conduct site surveys and participate in technical meetings on customer sites. Develop functional, detailed and software design specifications from user requirement specifications. PLC (including safety) and HMI programming using Siemens, Rockwell and others as applicable. System design and creation of required robot, PLC and HMI programming using IEC 61131-3 languages. Ensure all engineering produced complies with relevant directives and harmonised standards. Perform design and machinery risk assessments to ISO 12100, implementing countermeasures for identified risks. Ensure all relevant documentation is included in the CE technical file. Ensure customer documentation accurately reflects supplied machinery and is complete by the required date. Participate in internal and customer PDI’s. Sign off equipment and projects as ready to ship, confirming that they are fit for purpose, complete and tested. Start up, commission and fault find equipment on customer sites and support remotely as required. Ensure that the latest version of the equipment software is uploaded and identified on the company network. Review site reports daily for assigned products and projects, and ensure any support is given as a matter of urgency. Support the Production, Field Service and Customer Service departments as required. Support the commercial team and customers using technical expertise to find innovative solutions. Assist Applications with technical solutions and input on expected timelines. Ensure assigned tasks are completed within agreed timelines and in a cost-effective manner. Identify and support process and product improvements, utilising L3 tools. Support innovation and new product line integration. Allocate time engineering to relevant MO through ATM and complete timesheet daily (target absorption 90%). Ensure expense forms are completed and receipts submitted to finance within a month. Ensure assigned work areas are kept tidy, free from hazards and always customer ready. Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, current legislation and BWIS policies and procedures. Ensure safety glasses and shoes are worn in assembly areas along with additional PPE when required. Travel to customer sites and other business locations, which may be at short notice and require overnight stays. Be available and flexible to work overtime on evenings and weekends when required. Attend training courses to support duties and development, which may not be held at Doncaster and may require travel within the UK or overseas.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience in Controls and Automation, ideally in the packaging industry. Education in a relevant engineering discipline to HNC/HND qualification. Software design experience on Rockwell and/or Siemens PLCs and HMIs is essential. Knowledge and experience of using industrial communication protocols (EthernetIP and/or Profinet) is essential. Motion and servo control systems experience would be beneficial. Excellent interpersonal and time management skills to handle response-time pressures in this industry. Ability to convert verbal, written and other media-based information into project documentation. Excellent computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office packages such as Excel, Word, and Outlook. Ability to organize and successfully execute multiple project responsibilities. A self-starter with a can-do flexible attitude. Ability to work as an individual or as part of a team. Drive and determination to succeed.
