About this role

About the Role Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for managing all aspects of financial leadership including ensuring the accurate and timely closing of all accounting books, preparing financial reports, monthly account reconciliations and analysis, overseeing cashflow variances, directing all activities with external auditors and tax preparation, and providing financial guidance to the Finance Team. This role has direct oversight of the Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Budget departments with an operating budget of $85M per year. What You'll Do

  • Lead general accounting and reporting: annual consolidated audit, Limited Partnership audits, GAAP close, and preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • Manage monthly and quarterly close processes; present Budget to Actual and Balance Sheet reports; reconcile inter-company accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow, review weekly cash flow reports, and oversee initial audit, cost certification, and compliance for new projects.
  • Lead audit, tax filing, and compliance efforts; liaison with external auditors; oversee payroll tax filings, union filings, and government filings.
  • Develop/improve policies and procedures; implement systems to enhance finance team effectiveness; lead system conversions related to accounting and payroll.
  • Provide organizational and team leadership: supervise AP, Payroll, Budget teams; oversee hiring, training, and staff development.
  • Ensure effective cashflow management and collaborate on cost controls for new developments.
  • Monitor and analyze financial activities and provide guidance for decisions and strategic planning. What We're Looking For
  • Minimum 10+ years of nonprofit accounting experience with at least $20M in operating budget.
  • Experience with financial management of multiple entities (10+ preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's preferred; CPA preferred but not required.
  • Experience in affordable housing and expert knowledge of NYC, NYS, and Federal government fiscal management preferred.
  • At least 5 years of people management experience.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; collaborative team player.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Professional; proficiency in Sage MIP Fund Accounting and RealPage preferred.
  • Able to sit for long periods and lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Commitment to keeping updated on industry-specific knowledge. Nice to Have
  • CPA certification.
  • Direct experience with affordable housing finance and related compliance.
