About this role
Content Strategist
The Role
-
This is part strategist, part librarian. With a focus on Underwriting or Direct Distribution.
-
Underwriters make fast, high-stakes decisions that depend on accurate knowledge.
-
Sales advisors make quoting and binding decisions that depend on accurate knowledge.
-
You’ll give that knowledge a structure that the audience and AI systems can both trust.
-
You’ll own the classifications for USRM Underwriting or Direct Distribution knowledge: the taxonomy (how content is categorized), the terminology map (how different names for the same thing connect), the controlled vocabularies (approved terms and definitions) and the metadata schema (the details that describe each piece of content). You’ll also help shape how that knowledge supports the company’s AI goals.
-
Day to day, you’ll balance hands-on work, like tagging and building classification structures, with defining how they function. You’ll work directly with our business partners, since understanding their work is critical to getting the architecture right. You’ll often build from scratch, ideal for someone who enjoys bringing order to complexity and learning as they go.
This position may be fully remote or hybrid with some in-office requirements depending on candidate location.
Ideal Candidate Experience:
Great candidates come from many backgrounds. If you have many of these skills, or are excited to grow into them, we encourage you to apply.
-
Organizing information: 4+ years of experience helping people find and trust information, in taxonomy, information architecture, knowledge management, library science, data or content management, or a related field. You can walk us through a classification system, set of standard terms or tagging approach you designed, and what you learned.
-
Strategy and planning: You’ve set direction, not only carried it out, by building roadmaps and goals (such as OKRs), aligning to organizational priorities and creating structure where none existed.
-
Collaboration and influence: You help experts reach agreement, even when they see the same concept differently, and influence without formal authority through candid, constructive conversations.
-
Search and AI readiness: You’ve helped prepare content for search, chatbots or other AI tools, such as by structuring content or partnering with technical teams. Exposure to semantic search or retrieval-augmented generation is a plus.
-
Business knowledge: Underwriting, Distribution or insurance experience is a strong plus, as is curiosity about how underwriters work and make decisions.
-
Tools and standards: Familiarity with taxonomy tools, standards such as SKOS, or concepts like ontologies, knowledge graphs or linked data is helpful. We’ll support your learning.
-
Education: A degree in library and information science (MLIS), information or knowledge management, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
What you’ll do
-
Own the taxonomy. Design, maintain and evolve how USRM Underwriting or Direct Distribution content is organized and categorized.
-
Build the terminology map. Reconcile the different ways underwriters, sales advisors, agents, systems and policies name the same thing, capturing synonyms, acronyms, regional variations and legacy terms so people find what they need however they ask.
-
Manage approved terms (controlled vocabularies). Set standards for which terms to use and how they’re defined, and keep them current through clear review and update processes.
-
Define how content is described (metadata schema). Decide which details are required or optional for each piece of content, such as ownership, effective dates, applicability, authority level and lifecycle status, and work with content owners and technology partners to apply them consistently.
-
Shape our AI knowledge strategy. Define how structured, trustworthy knowledge powers search, AI assistants and other automation, and advise on what makes content ready and reliable for AI tools.
-
Measure and improve. Use search analytics, tagging quality, user feedback and AI performance to find gaps, test changes and show value.
-
Build the practice. Document standards, train contributors and set up clear ownership and decision-making so the taxonomy can grow without slowing people down.
-
Partner across the business. Work with the respective business leaders, subject matter experts, content owners, data, AI and engineering teams, and compliance to turn their needs into practical structure.
Qualifications
-
As typically acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism or related field or equivalent experience and 2+ years of experience in a related field
-
Experience leading content initiatives from ideation through implementation
-
Exposure to human-centered design practices and product development methodologies
-
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Exceptional written and oral communication skills
-
Comfortable interacting with all levels of the company
-
Ability to present projects and status reports
