Job title: Construction Manager
About the Role The Planet Group is seeking a Construction Manager to lead onsite management of large-scale combustion turbine construction projects in Burlington, IA. This role ensures safe, on-time delivery, quality construction, and regulatory compliance for complex energy projects.
What You'll Do
- Provide onsite management for project implementation of large-scale combustion turbine construction projects.
- Manage field personnel and oversight of Contractors and Subcontractors, ensuring work complies with contract specifications and applicable codes.
- Track project schedule, report status to management and customer on a regular basis, and implement processes in a timely, safe, cost effective and environmentally conscious manner.
- Promote safety policies and procedures; oversee safety culture; investigate accidents with the safety department and communicate findings to management.
- Administer and monitor safety programs and perform safety assessments.
- Ensure the execution and practice of quality controls and QC processes to maintain construction quality.
- Provide management and coordination with external contractors and equipment manufacturers; support permitting, equipment selection, and project design specifications; develop project schedules and cost estimates.
- Provide onsite contractor interface, local government interface and community relations.
- Read and understand maps, plans and drawings; supervise daily activities of staff and contractors to ensure alignment with drawings and specifications.
- Develop project Punch List, ensure completion, validate milestones/quantities for payment, and assist in field problem resolution.
- Ensure safety, cost control, scheduling, and quality performance measures are understood and improved upon using appropriate metrics.
- Communicate construction progress to stakeholders regarding Safety, Production, Risk, Schedule, Finance, and Quality, and report any situations requiring management attention.
- Supervise employees and subcontractors; provide guidance and leadership on renewable site construction activities.
- Enforce regulatory rules (e.g., DOT, OSHA, DNR) and coordinate with internal teams, customers, and permitting processes.
- Maintain a strong safety culture and coordinate with the safety department for incident investigations and corrective actions.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred.
- 8 years of professional experience in construction-related positions (e.g., management, project controls, QA/QC).
- 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Preferred experience in large electric construction, gas and electric operations, project management, or related area.
- Demonstrated project management skills and experience managing construction projects.
- Experience working with labor union management preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety rules and applicable building codes; knowledge of construction standards, work methods, equipment, maintenance practices and materials.
- Ability to read and understand maps, plans and drawings.
- Demonstrated management and financial skills (budget development, interpreting financial reports, financial evaluations).
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer software programs (email, word processing, spreadsheets, and project management).
- Understanding and enforcement of rules set by regulatory bodies (DOT, OSHA, DNR).
- Ability to interface with internal project team, customers, and supervise staff daily.
- Develop project Punch List and ensure its completion.
Nice to Have
- Previous experience with major coal and/or gas plant construction.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay: $70-$75/hour, DOE.
- Contract length: 12 months.
- Schedule: 40 hours per week.
- Location: Burlington, IA.
