About the Role Canonical is seeking a Community Engineer to design, execute, and scale initiatives that foster a thriving open source Ubuntu community. The role acts as a facilitator between community members and Canonical, helping align community plans with Canonical strategy and resource flows. It’s an opportunity for a technically proficient person who loves open source, Linux, and sustainable community building to turn ideas into practical, scalable programs.
What You'll Do
- Design, execute, and scale community initiatives to drive impact across the Ubuntu ecosystem.
- Create and publish high-quality content to promote initiatives and keep the community informed.
- Collaborate with developers, Developer Relations engineers, product managers, marketing and external partners to align community plans with Canonical goals.
- Support and engage with volunteer Ubuntu developers, addressing their concerns and helping them build successful tools.
- Lead complex, multi-disciplinary programs from conception through launch.
- Facilitate community processes and workflows to improve efficiency and contributor experience.
- Represent the Ubuntu community and Canonical in the wider Linux ecosystem.
- Attend conferences and expos to discuss technical community projects and development processes.
- Encourage and facilitate creation of new technical projects that enhance the community contribution experience.
What We're Looking For
- Technical proficiency and a passion for open source software, Linux, and sustainable community building.
- Experience in community management or developer relations and working with volunteer contributors.
- Ability to design and lead multi-disciplinary programs from concept to launch.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to collaborate with developers, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
- Experience producing content and engaging with diverse audiences.
- Comfort with remote work and coordinating across time zones.
- Nice to have: Experience with Ubuntu or Canonical ecosystems; conference speaking or community leadership experience.
