About the Role Communications Officer I is a trainee role within Roanoke County’s 9-1-1 dispatch team. The position supports emergency and non-emergency communications and serves as a critical link between citizens and first responders. This role trains on and handles vital dispatch duties to ensure prompt response and public safety. What You'll Do
- Handle incoming and outgoing telephone calls for emergency and non-emergency lines.
- Operate both law enforcement and Fire/EMS radios, following established policies and privacy laws.
- Complete and maintain required testing, training, and certifications; work efficiently under minimal supervision.
- Provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions during high-stress situations. What We're Looking For
- High school diploma; customer-service experience in fast-paced or stressful environments.
- Completion of in-house call taker training and Virginia DCJS Basic Dispatch.
- Ability to obtain CPR/AED and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certifications.
- Typing speed of 25 words per minute and ability to pass background checks. Nice to Have
- Experience with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), GIS, Microsoft Office, and Text-to-911. Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $45,000 per year.
