About the organisation Diverse Voices is a Queensland-based not-for-profit LGBTIQA+ led organisation that supports the wellbeing, safety and inclusion of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy people and communities across the state. We provide community-led peer support, community engagement and connection activities and events, domestic, family and sexual violence support, suicide prevention activities, counselling, and education and training. Our work is grounded in dignity, respect, inclusion, lived experience, accessibility, intersectionality and self-determination.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to management committee discussions by bringing relevant skills, knowledge, lived experience, professional expertise or community perspectives.

  • Support the management committee to consider the needs, strengths and experiences of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy people and communities across Queensland.

  • Participate in management committee meetings, planning discussions and decision-making processes as agreed.

  • Provide advice, input or support on specific projects, governance matters, policy areas, community engagement, partnerships, advocacy, risk, service quality or organisational development, depending on the member’s skills and interests.

  • Review papers, reports, policies and correspondence before meetings and contribute thoughtful feedback.

  • Support respectful, inclusive and trauma-informed governance that reflects Diverse Voices’ values and community-led purpose.

  • Declare and appropriately manage any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest.

  • Maintain confidentiality and handle organisational, community and personal information appropriately.

  • Work collaboratively with the Chairperson, management committee members, Executive Director, staff, volunteers and community representatives.

  • Governance and compliance expectations

  • As a management committee member, the Co-opted Member is expected to act with reasonable care and diligence, act honestly and in the best interests of Diverse Voices and its purposes, manage conflicts of interest, avoid misuse of position or information, maintain confidentiality and support effective, inclusive and accountable governance.

  • The Co-opted Member is expected to understand and comply with the organisation’s constitution or rules, code of conduct, policies, delegations and relevant legal and regulatory obligations that apply to their role.

  • Key Skills & Experience

  • Commitment to the safety, dignity, inclusion and leadership of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

  • Lived experience as part of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, not-for-profit governance in an Australian and Queensland context.

  • Skills, knowledge or experience relevant to Diverse Voices’ work, such as community engagement, policy and governance, finance, legal, human services, counselling, domestic, family and sexual violence, suicide prevention, fundraising, communications, public policy, advocacy, lived experience leadership, cultural safety, accessibility or organisational development.

  • Commitment to anti-discrimination, cultural safety, accessibility, trauma-informed practice and intersectional approaches.

  • Ability to contribute constructively to meetings, ask thoughtful questions and consider information from multiple perspectives.

  • Integrity, reliability, respect for confidentiality and willingness to seek guidance or professional advice when needed.

  • Ability to work respectfully with management committee members, staff, volunteers, community members, funders and external advisers.

  • Time commitment

  • The role is voluntary. The expected time commitment is approximately 15-20 hours month, including attendance at management committee meetings, preparation of financial reports, liaison with staff or volunteers and periodic support for budgeting, annual reporting, audit or verification processes and the annual general meeting.

  • Eligibility and requirements

  • Must be eligible to serve as a management committee member under the organisation’s constitution or rules and applicable law.

  • Must be willing to comply with the organisation’s code of conduct, conflict of interest policy, financial delegations and other relevant policies.

  • Must maintain confidentiality and handle personal, financial and organisational information appropriately.

  • Willingness to complete onboarding, identity checks (paid for by organisation), referee checks, working with children or other screening checks (paid for by organisation) depending on the organisation’s activities and policies.

  • Lived experience as part of the LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

  • People with diverse identities, cultures, abilities, experiences and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • People with relevant skills, transferable experience and/or connection to LGBTIQA+SB communities, who have not yet had the opportunity to gain management committee or board experience, are welcome and encouraged to apply.
