About the Role
The Clinical Supervisor I or II for Medical Surgical Nursing is a part-time staff position responsible for clinical teaching and supervision of Medical Surgical nursing students in clinical settings, in accordance with the policies of the clinical site and the School of Nursing & Health Professions. The role includes evaluating competencies, planning and assigning clinical duties, orienting students to clinical sites, conducting post-clinical conferences, providing written evaluations, and supporting student learning in collaboration with SU faculty and staff. Responsibilities may involve off-campus sites, evening and/or weekend duties, course meetings, required site orientation, and simulation support.
What You'll Do
- Engage in clinical supervision activities totaling no more than the equivalent of seven clinical groups per calendar year.
- Provide supervision and instruction to students in clinical and/or skills laboratory settings.
- Collaborate with the course coordinator and/or instructor to plan clinical time, patient assignments, and learning objectives based on classroom theory.
- Coach students and demonstrate nursing care in a variety of clinical settings (hospitals, outpatient clinics, home care, etc.).
- Evaluate student performance of clinical skills and associated written and oral assignments.
- Meet with students to discuss performance and provide feedback and improvement plans as needed.
- Participate in course meetings, required site orientations, and student meetings; submit progress reports to the course coordinator as requested.
- Participate in the Clinical Supervisors’ Development Workshop each semester in which one or more clinical groups are supervised.
- Maintain collegial and professional conduct in interactions with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the public.
What We're Looking For
- B.S. in Nursing required for Clinical Supervisor I; M.S. in Nursing required for Clinical Supervisor II.
- RN licensed in Maryland or another Compact State with two or more years of recent experience in the relevant field.
- College-level teaching experience preferred but not required.
- Proficiency as a practicing RN; current knowledge of the field; excellent oral and written communication; ability to plan, organize, and evaluate clinical education experiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills; commitment to teaching and student achievement; familiarity with educational assessment practices.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and with varied learning styles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel; ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Nice to Have
- College-level teaching experience (if not listed above).
- Experience with simulation and assisting in simulation-based clinical groups.
- Experience with off-campus clinical rotations and site coordination.
Compensation & Benefits
- Anticipated salary range: $1,144 to $5,887 per clinical experience, depending on clinical hours, rank of clinical supervisor, and level of students. Paid monthly.
