Job title: Clinical Lab Assistant
About the Role The Clinical Lab Assistant supports laboratory operations across multiple modalities with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Compensation is dependent on the number of modalities performed, and candidates without experience may be considered for a paid apprenticeship. Regular in-person attendance and on-call responsibilities are required.
What You'll Do
- Perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and maintain supplies and inventory for departmental functions
- Observe students and new staff as needed and participate in training/competency assessments
- Handle hospital communications and on-call responsibilities as assigned by location
- Demonstrate effective telephone and verbal communication and maintain client/patient confidentiality
- Perform clerical duties, document critical communications, and report in the absence of a supervisor
- Participate in on-call and holiday/weekend coverage to meet service levels
- Support general phlebotomy and specimen processing as directed (ages 10+)
- Assist with department-specific modalities training and competency documentation
- Support lab equipment maintenance and waste management as applicable
- Assist with check-in, order entry/reconciliation, and specimen tracking
What We're Looking For
- Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent; preferred PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification; completion of a relevant Clinical Lab Assistant or comparable program
- Immunization & Health Requirements: Prove Hepatitis B immunity or be immunized or sign waiver; provide documentation of a PPD test within 90 days prior to hire or as required; direct-contact departments require immunity to rubella, rubeola, and varicella
- General Requirements: Valid driver's license with a good driving record and insurability; eligible to work in a healthcare facility per NM Caregivers Criminal History Screening Act or applicable law
- Minimum Experience: Apprenticeship pathway available for candidates with no training; CLA levels (1-4) assigned based on modalities completed; modalities include check-in, phlebotomy, special collections, procedures assistance, specimen processing, non-conformity investigation, equipment maintenance, and sample testing
Nice to Have
- PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification (preferred)
- Completion of a relevant Clinical Lab Assistant program or comparable program (preferred)
- Special Collections/external shipping certification; N95 fit testing (optional)
