Job title: Clinical Lab Assistant Phlebotomist

About the Role The Clinical Lab Assistant Phlebotomist works independently and with minimal supervision in a hospital-based laboratory. The role supports one or more identified modalities, with compensation dependent on the number of modalities performed. A paid apprenticeship option is available for candidates without experience.

What You'll Do

  • Perform duties professionally and courteously while maintaining supplies and inventory needed for departmental functions.
  • Observe and mentor students or new staff as needed; exercise basic problem solving to ensure quality patient care.
  • Manage hospital communications, including on-call responsibilities by location; maintain effective telephone and verbal communication.
  • Exercise professional judgment when interacting with clients, patients, and co-workers; perform clerical tasks and document critical communications in the supervisor's absence.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal and confidential information; participate in on-call and holiday/weekend coverage as required.
  • Demonstrate basic PC skills; adhere to attendance expectations and scheduled hours.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum education: High School diploma or equivalent; preferred: PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification and completion of a relevant CLA program.
  • Immunization: Hepatitis B immunity or immunization or waiver; PPD test within 90 days prior to hire or conducted through TriCore; for departments with direct patient contact, immunity to rubella, rubeola, and varicella.
  • General requirements: Valid driver's license with a good driving record; able to be insured by the lab's insurer; eligible to work in a healthcare facility per NM Caregivers Criminal History Screening Act.
  • Minimum experience: Candidates with no prior training may be considered for an apprenticeship; selected candidates placed into CLA Level 1–4 based on modalities completed. Modality areas include check-in, phlebotomy, specimen processing, and more.

Nice to Have

  • Department-specific skills in various modalities and competency assessment; N95 respirator fit testing experience.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay; compensation dependent on modalities performed; paid apprenticeship option available for entry-level candidates. Regular attendance during scheduled hours and on-call requirements are essential.
