About the Role A Clerk I position within State of New Jersey agencies performing routine, repetitive clerical tasks under close supervision. The role supports document processing, mail handling, data entry, and general office operations, with potential bilingual Spanish/English duties as required.

What You'll Do

  • Receive, screen, review and verify documents for corrections and completeness.
  • Open, time stamp, sort, index, and distribute mail; maintain mailing lists and files.
  • Process applications, forms and fees; assemble information for processing; prepare packages for shipment.
  • Enter and retrieve information on computer terminals; perform occasional keyboarding as needed.
  • Provide routine information to the public in person or by phone; refer non-routine inquiries to staff.
  • Assist in requisitioning, storing, and distributing office supplies; assist in payroll preparation and simple arithmetic.
  • Schedule administrative proceedings and process scheduling changes.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on office equipment (printers, copiers, stamping machines, labelers, etc.).
  • Learn to prepare court dockets and contact witnesses/attorneys; assist staff as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English; ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in both languages sufficiently to perform duties.
  • Knowledge of office routines, equipment and practices after training; ability to comprehend and follow established procedures.
  • Ability to organize clerical work, develop effective work methods, and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English; ability to work with the public and staff.
  • Ability to input and retrieve information on computer terminals; basic keyboarding may be required.
  • Ability to sort, index, file and retrieve materials using an established filing system; maintain accuracy and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on office machines; familiarity with agency information systems after training.
  • Driver's license valid in New Jersey only if vehicle operation is necessary to perform duties.
