About this role
A Cleared Member/Senior R&D Systems Engineer is needed onsite in Albuquerque, NM to support the W87-1 System Test Team. The role focuses on planning, executing, and documenting system-level tests and environment-related activities to advance modernization and qualification of weapons systems. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and partner organizations to address complex engineering challenges, contribute to test lifecycle management, and help ensure safety, security, and program success.
Responsibilities
- Actively engage in planning and executing electrical and mechanically representative system-level tests, guiding them from kickoff through execution and reporting, and ensuring tests meet rigorous standards.
- Own, facilitate, and release Environment Specification (ES) documents, coordinating with ModSim for derivation and integrating with system design and qualification teams to ensure released products reflect the system approach.
- Solve problems dynamically by working with multidisciplinary teams across the Nuclear Security Enterprise to address real-time testing and environment-derivation challenges.
- Foster collaborative partnerships with Components, Systems, Mod/Sim, Test Facilities, and subject matter experts to coordinate efforts across multiple sites and time zones for seamless test integration and execution.
- Innovatively integrate Weapon Response (WR), Joint Test Assessment (JTA), and Trainer components at the system level through design and testing iterations.
- Engage with key stakeholders, including the National Nuclear Security Administration and partner Design Agency Labs, to ensure technical and programmatic requirements are met.
- Drive system excellence by embracing new challenges and opportunities for innovation on a daily basis.
- Some travel may be required, up to 25% throughout the year; the role requires onsite work.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and engineering or scientific experience demonstrating the ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent to start.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience in system-level testing and integration, including planning, execution, and reporting across the full test lifecycle.
- Experience deriving or writing Environment Specification (ES) documents.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate within fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams and across multiple sites.
- Adaptability and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to navigating ambiguity and challenges.
- An ideal candidate may have additional qualifications including:
- A graduate degree in Engineering or a closely related field with an independent research project (thesis or dissertation).
- Experience with Nuclear Security Enterprise laboratories and plants (e.g., Pantex, KCNSC, LLNL, KCNSC/NMO).
- Experience in engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
- Experience in a weapon system environment with knowledge of Nuclear Deterrence Product Realization.
- In-depth knowledge of safety and security requirements for activity-level work and regulatory compliance.
- Experience working with environment derivation, system-level testing, and integration across design and testing teams.
- The W87-1 System team collaborates with LLNL, LANL, and LM; the role involves working with cross-site partners to execute joint system tests and ensure alignment with program goals.
