Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital as a Chaplain in the Community Affairs Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

With the leadership of the Manager, the Chaplain collaborates with staff in the development, coordination and implementation of actions to address the spiritual and human needs of patients, their families and staff, seeks to creatively improve the quality of patient care using the resources available, and provides emotional and spiritual support for staff.

Essential Job Functions

  • On-Call for crisis ministries during regular and irregular work hours
  • Effectively manages time
  • Encourages and facilitates referrals related to specific patients from physicians, nurses, local clergy, patients’ families or other team members
  • Provides limited counseling to staff personnel of the hospital and make appropriate referrals, and informs Manager of the Department on the number of hours spent weekly in such service
  • Plans, organizes and implements an effective program of pastoral services for the assigned patient care units
  • Attends appropriate Patient Care Conference, Medical Staff departmental educational conferences and biweekly educational meetings of the Department of Pastoral Services
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with all members of the health team, especially in the assigned patient care units
  • Establishes and continues implementation of departmental programs with and for area clergy and religious groups
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of the department

Required Qualifications

  • Degree of A.B. or B.S. in an accredited college or university
  • Graduate of an Accredited seminary or rabbinical school with the degree of Master of Divinity or its equivalent
  • Responsible experience as a parish clergyman and as hospital chaplain or chaplain intern
  • Ordained as a clergyman in good standing and shall be endorsed by the ecclesiastical body to which he belongs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education at an accredited center
  • Certification by the College of Chaplains within the first year of employment

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
