Job title: Catering Food Service Generalist (FSG)
About the Role St. Lawrence University is seeking a Catering Food Service Generalist (FSG) to support VIP and special-function events. Under the supervision of the Catering Manager and unit supervisory staff, this is a full-time seasonal role covering preparation, equipment and linen management, setting up and breaking down events, and delivering front-line service during events. A high level of professionalism and customer service is required.
What You'll Do
- Check and review the special functions and anticipate needs for current and future events.
- Develop a list of dishes and equipment needed for each function.
- Gather all listed items, plus linen, and check quality and cleanliness; maintain linen inventory.
- Monitor production status and advise management and supervisory staff.
- Communicate effectively with all catering and unit staff.
- Assist in food production and in food and equipment delivery.
- Set up functions, including linen, table settings, buffet presentation, etc.
- Guide and supervise waitstaff during preparation, service and clean up.
- Assist in customer service during the event, including table service, buffet replenishment, and beverage/bar services.
- Clear function and return the event location to pre-function condition.
- Load, unload, and store food and equipment following the event.
- Coordinate and train temporary staff; may coordinate and train temporary student waitstaff.
- Perform regular unit Food Service Generalist duties as part of dining services operations.
- Schedule driven by event requests; may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must meet university requirements to serve alcohol and to drive a university vehicle.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent; one to two years of catering and/or upscale dining and waiting experience.
- Ability to properly wait on tables, lift 20 pounds, and stand/walk for several hours.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to follow food production equipment, dishwashing, and other mechanical devices.
- Positive attitude and the ability to contribute to a positive dining services operation.
- Must be able to meet university requirements to serve alcohol and to drive a university vehicle.
