About the Role The State of New Jersey seeks a Cashier/Payments Clerk to process payments received by mail and over the counter, operate a cash register, and perform basic posting to accounts. This role supports agency financial operations by reconciling receipts, preparing simple financial statements, and handling routine inquiries from the public. The position requires accuracy, reliable recordkeeping, and the ability to learn agency recording systems. What You'll Do

  • Receive cash and/or checks by mail and over the counter for payment of rental fees, taxes, water fees, licenses, electric services, hospital bills, and similar items.
  • Operate a cash register, total item prices, collect cash, make change, and reconcile receipts with the register tape.
  • Totals cash and/or checks, prepare deposits, and post items to accounts manually or using bookkeeping machines.
  • Follow guidelines and compute interest on delinquent bills; maintain records and files.
  • Answer phones and transfer calls; respond to routine inquiries at the counter or by phone.
  • Learn to utilize various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency.
  • May prepare simple financial statements by adding or subtracting totals as required. What We're Looking For
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, including discount and interest; ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to count and record numerical data; follow detailed oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain records and files; ability to utilize electronic/manual recording and information systems.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the general public; strong customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, understanding, and communicating in English; ASL or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with reasonable accommodations; if accommodations would cause undue hardship, eligibility may be affected. Nice to Have
