About the Role The Building Inspector position with the State of New Jersey enforces the State Uniform Construction Code (UCC) and related regulations. The role involves plan review, field inspections, and enforcement actions to ensure that buildings comply with state and local codes during construction and renovation. The position may require different licenses and involves coordination with local authorities, contractors, and architects.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct plan reviews and field inspections to verify compliance with the State Uniform Construction Code and local ordinances.
  • Prepare violation notices and maintain inspection records and reports.
  • Investigate complaints, enforce code requirements, and prosecute violations in court when necessary.
  • Coordinate with local authorities, private contractors, architects, and municipal units to resolve code issues.
  • Apply knowledge of structural design, fire protection, materials standards, and testing methods to ensure compliance.
  • Review building construction plans for accuracy and feasibility and provide clear recommendations.
  • Stay current with changes to the UCC and sub-codes and apply them to residential, small commercial, and high-rise/hazardous structures as applicable.

What We're Looking For

  • Possession of a valid Building Inspector's license (appropriate class) issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
  • One year of experience in construction code enforcement, plan review, or building inspections.
  • Knowledge of the State Uniform Construction Code (UCC) and procedures to inspect buildings for compliance.
  • Ability to carry out provisions of the UCC as they relate to residential and small commercial structures.
  • Ability to prepare building construction plans and specifications, and to review for accuracy and feasibility those prepared by others.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other municipal unit heads and with private contractors and architects.
  • Valid NJ driver’s license if the operation of a vehicle is required to perform duties.
  • Knowledge of RCS license requirements and the ability to apply UCC provisions for class II construction (ICS) and HHS license aspects as applicable.
