Job title: Bronchoscopy Technician

About the Role The Bronchoscopy Technician is an essential member of the Bronchoscopy Service at UCSF. The technician is responsible for setting up equipment prior to procedures, providing local anesthesia to patients, assisting the bronchoscopist with handling instruments, collecting samples, and cleaning up after procedures. The Bronchoscopy Service provides the equipment, supplies, and trained technical personnel to assist physicians during bronchoscopies and related pulmonary procedures, and may be involved in clinical research protocols. The service also supports training for medical residents and Pulmonary Fellows during rotations.

What You'll Do

  • Set up equipment prior to procedures.
  • Provide local anesthesia to patients.
  • Assist the bronchoscopist with handling procedure instruments, including biopsy forceps, brushes, and needles.
  • Collect samples and prepare them for analysis.
  • Clean up after procedures and maintain a clean procedural area.
  • Generate reports and bills, and maintain inventory of equipment and disposable supplies.
  • Work as part of the Bronchoscopy Service to support Pulmonary Attending Physicians and Interventional Pulmonologists during bronchoscopies and related procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • BA/BS in Biological Sciences or another applicable natural science major; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience working with extremely ill patients in a hospital or clinic setting.
  • Environmental health and safety training and HIPAA training.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people, including extremely ill patients.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to work closely with other employees and troubleshoot problems independently and in a team setting.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and be sensitive to their needs.
  • Ability to adapt to multiple demands/high-volume work environment.
  • Ability to perform local anesthesia to patients.
  • Ability to assist with handling biopsy forceps, brushes and biopsy needles.
  • Ability to push a heavy cart containing equipment and supplies.
